Should I clearcoat JDM 1 Piece Headlights?

VI Massive - I’m in the process of doing the exact same retrofit as you but have some questions.

I’ve noticed the placement of the projector is pretty far upwards towards the lens, shouldn’t it be moved further back? Have you noticed any burnt/melting blemishes on the 1 piece lens itself since the bulb of the projector is kinda close to it? Also, did you have to trim the bottom of the chrome housing to make the solenoid part on the projectors fit or you only trimmed the top part?

By the way… your retrofit thread has helped me a great deal… just wanted to say thanks and big props to ya for stuffing the huge as FX45 projectors into the 1 pieces!

i’m looking at some e46 m3 bi-xenon projectors…are those smaller than the FX ones?

ez12a - I think there’s a member on here that retrofitted the e46 projectors on the 1 pieces already if I’m not mistaken.

imo the e46 suck in light output compared to all the other bi-xenons out there. but answering your original question yes the e46 is slightly shorter

What projector would be best? considering size and output?

rs6 are pretty good. a bit better than the E55s due to not having a dull finish projector bowl.

G35s and FX35/45s are also pretty good. porsche/stanley are also good. same makers of the TLs
VI Massive, what projectors did you use? Those are bi-xenon i presume?

how tall are the ones you used? when you get those working, i’d like to see the cutoff!
Yep, those are the Infiniti FX 35/45 projectors. The cutoffs are not that great…That’s why most people now are sanding the flutes on the 1-pieces. I’ll TRY to get some pics.

The projectors sit pretty close to the lense but, I have not noticed any burnt marks or blemishes on the headlights. HID bulbs tend to produce alot less heat compared to a filament bulbs. As far as trimming the chrome housing…Yes, I had to cut both the top and the bottom to fit that projector. That’s why I recommended using a smaller projector on the first page…The FX projectors fit, but required alot of trimming…I barely got them in there. Maybe something from BMW or Acura would work better…They arent cheap though.:whisper:

thanks VI Massive you have been very helpful

VI Massive - when you tapped the HID kit into the car’s headlight wiring, did you use any other relays cuz I saw somewhere on hidplanet.com that says for old cars like ours, you’re supposed to splice in a relay or else the hid kit is going to fry our lighting/wiring system… or did I read wrong?

its always better to use a relay

at startup you pull about 2-3x the amps of a stock bulb

that will burn/make your stock wiring HARD

a few bucks and u can make one

even though i didnt run one, i would of liked to just was lazy

hybrid, if you want a harness, i have a spare 9004 Hid relay harness that i bought out of fear that my kit didnt come with one. Its new and never used. Its only for single beam however, so no bi-xenons. Let me know whats up.

it should work with any aftermarket ballast, or those philips LVQ type ballasts. You could probably cut em up and mod them to work with any other one too.

ez12a - I’m going to look into making one myself, plus mines bi-zenon and if I can’t or too lazy to make one, I’ll hit you up… how much are you asking by the way… thanks

I was thinking around 17 plus shipping.

im a bit curious as to why you cut up the projector bowl (behind), the original bulb base and everything.

so you cut up the back of the projector so that it would sit against the reflector bowl of the JDMs so that it could use the headlights oem mounting base?

and you bought a HID kit according to the JDM headlights which is H4H.

how did you assure yourself that you were still at the correct focal distance as before?

Everything you said is correct. As far as the focal length is concered, I guess I got lucky…It’s not perfect by any means. The output could be alot better, but I did not factor the distance of the bulb to the lense. That’s a good point and maybe others can remember this step in their retro-fit.

I actually did the retrofit the other way… kinda like how the other member Vincent did it. I cut the actual 1 piece housing instead of cutting the projectors housing. That way I ended up using the projectors D2S bulb mounts versus using the 1 piece H4H bulb mounts to ensure the correct distance of the bulb within the projectors.

I guess by doing it that way, you have more choices or brands for the D2S hid kits rather than the H4H hid kits.

so i am trying to get my headlights recleared. i called a local shop and was quoted $150 to do both headlights. is that normal? that seems a little crazy to me.

so i have been using the plastic polish stuff everynow and then to keep my one-pieces looking good. if you get them cleared again, you can stop doing that right?

and btw, I have a question. In a moment of “infinite stupidity” I didnt put the rubber moisture gaurd thing on the back of my one-pieces when i first got them… it rained and i got water in them. i got the water out, but now there is some residue on the inside of my one-pieces. i do NOT want to open them up to clean it. does anyone know of a particular solution (or perhaps just hot water) that I could put in there, swish around and empty out to clean them??? I just really dont want to go through all the hassle of baking them to open them up and all that… i dont have time either.

thanx

^^ you can try doing the “clearing pink lines in the taillight method” and see if the residue will come off. So baiscally just mix Castrol superclean with hot water then swish it around in there snd see if that will help…
