Should I convert to OBD1 with my b20 engine?

So I was searching around and it seems that some people with OBD0 cars with a b20 are a little dissappointed with the gains.

Then I read that the ecu is not made for the b20’s characteristics and thinking that the obd1 or obd2 would be better suited for the b20.

I understand that the b20 is essentially a b18, but still expected a little more from the b20 I have in my car.

So, as for discussion sake, do you think it is best that a obd1/2 conversion is done on OBD0 cars with b20’s in them for better gains?

Some great facts/proof that you guys/gals have would be appreciated. Thanks!

neone??

this was the same thing i was wondering too. i too have a b20 with a obd0 ecu. i am going to swtich obd1 though. why? obd0 was meant to run only 130 hp while the obd1 non-vtec (p75 i think) was made to run 140 hp which is the most competable hp range for b20. when in doubt, obd1 is better!!

OBD 1 is also a lot better for tuning, chippable and a better starting point. Do searches, but i believe a guy on Honda-tech that did the big B20b/b20z review found that a d16 ECU worked best, even compared to the b20 ecu. They found out at redline the b20 likes to run leaner.

Also, look into buying a p8r head, to up compression .4 and take advantage of the larger valve.

I myself dont even have a teg, i have a 2001 Civic which cant even use a b20. BUT SINCE people are fairly new to b20’s they arent all aware or the p8r head, and u can find a head for cheap off a new person that did a b20/vtec swap, and has the head lieng around.

I want to find a p8r head as well but it seems those are “rare”.

I have been researching a bit on the obd1 for the b20 and it just seems that everyone that has obd1 or 2 can tell a “huge” difference from their b18. I also wanted to do the OBD1 just for some extra on board diagnostics. There are alot more possibilities with it, it seems.

I have higher CR pistons and the engine still doesn’t feel as fast as I think it should. I still need to check the timing on it. I’m getting 28mpg so I think its fine till I go home to use the timing gun.

Does the d16 ECU plug right in my current 0bd0 wiring harness or does there need to be some modifications?

no d16 is obd1 (i think or 2) SEARCH! youll need to get a obd0 to obd1/2 conversion harness. OR rewire yourself.

So I’m assuming that the moral of the story is that OBD0 just plain sucks ass and to get the most out of the engine one should convert over to OBD1 to get some additional gains?

You can use a d16 ecu on a nonvtec car?

are u kidding me? wat about EG civic’s?.. HMMM d16z6? d15’s? please do more research before u shoot off anything like that. Any civic from 92-95 is obd1.

WHAT THE FUC!!! :stfu: WHAT THE HELL R U TALKING ABOUT CANADIAN BOI. FIRST OF ALL ITS 92-95 THAT IS OBD1 BOI. 96+ IS OBD2 BOI. PLEASE LEARN HOW TO READ AND THEN LEARN HOW TO USE YOUR BRAIN TO PROCESS THE INFORMATION BFORE U START BABBLING BOI!! HAVE A NICE DAY! :english:

All of you stop fucking arguing.

I had a B20b in my '90 LS… got it checked out and the OBD-0 harness was just as good as any other… it just throws less codes when there are problems with ACTUAL DIAGNOSTICS.

It will run fine on OBD-0

edit: I also had a p8R head… feel free to shoot any questions mang… hth.

Lol, i had a typo on the 92-96. I meant 92-95 EG’s. 96+ are obd2.

Also, Maybe u should read the other post “BOI”( lol , loser) and find out he is giving false information, which will mess over the thread poster. I caught my mistake, and was helping him find the correct ECU, which is more than i can say for your post.

youre the fucking moron saying no d16 is obd-1 or 2 what about every civic made from 92-98? :stfu:

i have an obd1 d16 in my civic hatch. and my brother has an obd2 d16 in his 99 civic coupe… :owned:

he had a d16…didnt ya kyle? :nana:

:nana:

:giggle:

Stop ruining this thread! This is a discussion on wether it is important to convert obd0 cars to obd1 and if its beneficial. Stop the high school stuff and stop swearing, it really lowers the value of g2ic.

I did a little searching the d16 engine ecu can also be from the jdm ZC car. Is this the ecu that is better for the b20? More discussion on the topic would be appreciated.

any LS ecu would be great for a b20… just as long as you don’t rev as high as it lets you.

WOW!!! I can’t believe there is not one person on here backing up OBD0. OBD0 is fine. You can do just about anything you want with it. I’ve installed a b20 in a 1990 civic hatch and ran it off an OBD0 pr3 (normally a vtec ecu) that I reprogrammed myself with BRE. Car ran beautifully, no problems. With an extremely restrictive B18a intake manifold and some skinny ass bald tires the car ran a 14.9 three times in a row. Obviously none of you have heard of Bens Rom Editing software. Don’t waste your time or money converting to OBD1, BRE and Turbo Edit will allow you to do anything you need. Even boosted applications.

tru tru, try pgmfi.com for mor ecu info…
