The Devondangers Build Thread, Take 2

ALRIGHT, so I had a 1992 GS, It burned last July. A bit of backstory, I had a lot of work, a B20b, suspension, etc… And then it burned. I swore I’d get another one, but these are getting so hard to find in good condition. It’s taken me a year and a half to find one, but I finally did it. It’s a 1990 GS in white. 5-speed manual, fully loaded, except for power locks. It has a flawless black interior, a couple blemishes in the paint, no real rust, 2 previous owners.

Sits on MOMO 16" rims and new tires. Bone stock engine/transmission, BWR coilovers. Needs brakes, probably tie rods, but it’ll be better soon.

Picture from the CL ad. It was all the way in Greeley, CO, around 75 miles from my house.

Radio and speakers professionally installed by previous owner.

Better pics coming soon.

Parked in Greeley next to a 392 Challenger, ZR1 Corvette, and a Callaway Corvette.

Some work will be done to this one. It has 173,XXX miles on it, and the engine is healthy, but old. If/when it needs replaced, I’m going B18C. I’ll probably put better coilovers on it, maybe one pieces. It’ll have a brake swap if I can afford it (legend brake upgrade).

Anyway, I’m back in style, hope to make a few DA meets soon.

Looks to be in great condition, especially for the mileage and age… Nice pick up!

And by b18c do you mean R or GSR?

Either way, nice to see you back in a DA!

i seen this on CL a few days ago glad u got it hope to see u around mile high summer 2014

very clean,great buy man.

It’ll be a GSR B18C1, most likely. Price n all…

Snapped a quick picture after work today.

Lookin good! Since we didn;t get a chance to meet before you moved from CO, lets not squander this one. I live with Glynn now so shouldn;t be too hard to find.

Also I’m pretty sure you have a rare combo with black on white, most white 90-91’s I’ve seen have the blue interior. Looks like a very solid ride!

Matt, Looking good brotha. Glad to hear life is going good for you. last time we talked I know that was a lot different

Come visit me at the new job and wash that thing up…

I wasn’t really prepared for how clean this is. It needs minor body/paint work, but mechanically sound.

I’m always around. Got a little work to do to my DA. Got a serious vibration from the right side, especially under power and decel, but no axle noise or real tie rod play, ball joints don’t seem loose, at least from what I can tell, considering I cant get a jack under it right now. It’s frustrating, cuz I can’t buy parts till I can properly nail down diagnosis.

Hey, I hate to thread jack but I think I saw that you work for a tuning company in Denver or something?

Glad to see you picked up a new car btw, looks like a good start!

Nope, denver metro smog/emissions testing. Wish I was a tuner, but I’m not.

Also, just need to make a point for the sake of covering my ass, I never have and never will offer to pass anyone’s car if it’ll fail or is expected to (that’s a felony). I’m just saying I have a ton of experience driving on a dynamometer, and you’re better off with me driving it, because I’m not afraid of a little torque steer.

P.S.
If you find me at work, be forewarned, I may be an asshole unless you mention G2IC. Working a job that offers no room for customer service (they tie our hands) makes it hard not to be preemptive about being a dick. Roughly 50-80% of people I deal with hate us in one way or another, but the job pays the bills.

Ahhh, I misread  That sucks that the job has to be that way. I love Wyoming, no smog or emissions testing here

So question time: I’ve been having issues with a shimmy in the steering wheel. Been wanting to diagnose tie rod ends, ball joints, and wheel bearings, and do brakes. There does seem to be an axle clicking that just started up, and my question is this: can an axle cause steering wheel vibration? I know a decent amount about suspension and I do plan on getting under the car in the next week or so, but I don’t want to have to do bushings, cv axles, tie rod ends, and wheel bearings, when I can dial in the problem without paying 500 bucks for parts.

Yes axles can most definitely cause vibrations. Tie rod ends and balljoints are easy to diagnose once you get them seperated (the fun part lol). If they flop around and have busted boots replace em! Don’t know about wheel bearings, if they don;t squeal I leave em but I’m sure it’s not correct.

Also I went pretty long on tires with the last teg I had. When I got them replaced all sorts of vibrations, shimmies, wop wop wop wops went away. I would start with making sure the tires are all balanced and rotate them. Especially if the previous owner went to a reputable nationwide tire shop, discount tire always does all that for free even if you are not original purchaser.

Update time. I’m not near a computer, so I can’t post pictures, but discovered the problem/problems. Number one, never use suspension built a DC Integra on a DA. The front suspension fork will rub on the CV axle, especially on the longer passenger side. This, and a bad alignment means I’m chewing through the inside of the tires at an alarming rate. I’m through the chords, and almost through the steel belt on the tires I rotated to the rear. My next step is to put stock suspension on it, sell the BWR coilovers (if I can find someone to buy them), buy a good Koni yellow setup with good springs, a bushing kit, and re-align, then put on new tires. Looking at hitting the track later next year, we’ll see.

Also had a major problem on my way to work Friday. My alternator belt snapped. It’s been very cold here recently ( sub-zero), and replacing that belt in a napa auto parts parking lot wasn’t going to happen. So I got it to my friend Jon’s house, and we got it done in time for a funeral (since work was cancelled ).

No other updates. I should probably replace the timing belt/water pump, but it’s probably going to have to wait till after I get the suspension figured out.

:pixstfu:

Here’s the passenger side suspension/knuckle, and you can see the extent of the problem. This is with the wheels straight. Once the wheel is turned past a certain point, it starts to actually apply pressure on the CV axle. I either need to sell off the coilovers, or I’ve heard that EF front forks work (diameter and clearance). Can anyone shed light on this? A :search: yielded the “Ever elusive hybrid suspension” thread, but little else.

And can anyone shed light on this one? It was lowered and then aligned to factory specs, but even with the wrong alignment specs, these tires should not look like that after only 2,500 miles (outside estimate). That’s camber wear/rubbing wear. Glynn suggested it might be rubbing on the UCA, but I don’t see smoke, smell rubber, or see any signs of rubber shavings. Then again, it’s been a bit since I’ve been under the car, so I’ll have to get back under it once temperatures raise up a bit again.

It’s camber, not toe wear, as there is NO cupping on the front tires. Rears have a little toe in, as there’s cupping on the inside of the tires, but there’s NOWHERE NEAR the type of damage as there is to the fronts. I’ve rotated, and I’m working on solving this issue before replacing the tires, but I’m thinking the ride height might just be too low.

Damn the previous owners of cars and incompetent shops. Who the hell looks at that first picture after they’ve bolted suspension from a DC Integra onto a DA and goes,
“Yes, I see nothing wrong with this.”

FFS, it’s suspension from a different car! At least do a lock-to-lock steering check for clearance issues.

Where you at these days, Glynn? Text me if you don’t want the internet to know.

Ok, so this might end up going in its own thread, but I did the rear brakes last weekend, so finally getting to pics, but first, an update. Having rotated those shitty tires to the rear, I ended up in a ditch a couple Mondays ago. There’s some damage to the car, and the paint, but it is what it is, and it just sets me back a bit. The concussion was the worst part, and the f’n ticket from state patrol, which I’ll be fighting for the first time in my life. Officer said I was doing between 45-65 MPH in a 35 based on what he looked at, and I know for a fact that due to ice, I was only doing 30. I lost the rear end on gravel placed at the end of a blind corner (brilliant), so it’s not surprising, just frustrating.

It’s whatever, I’ll just be happy to move on and deal with it accordingly. Not letting insurance take this one, it’ll be an “over time” thing, so don’t be surprised, CO peeps, if it’s not as mint as it was when I bought it.

So we’ll start with a pic to show original equipment, including Nissin pads. 23-year-old brake pads/rotors=not good.

Bought blanks from NAPA, and basic brake pads. As these brakes don’t do too much braking, and I’m mostly daily driving the car, I went with a cheaper, lower-temp brake compound. For my fronts (when I do them), I’ll be putting on Hawk HPS with a blank rotor, like my last teg.

I started by removing the caliper from its bracket.

Removed the old brake pads, which were to the wear indicators/past the wear indicators. Removing the screws holding on the old rotor was a bitch without an impact screwdriver. The passenger side (pictured) had to be drilled out with a metal drill bit, as they were rust-welded to the hub.

Removed the caliper bracket. I know it can be lifted out of the way without completely removing it, but it was easier to just remove it.

Another pic of the hub with the drilled-out screw in it. It’s still there, as it was getting dark and cold, and I just wanted to wrap up the brake job and get the teg back on the road.

Then came the bitch part. Bought this tool from NAPA for like 8 bucks, to deal with the ratcheting rear brake setup, and the tool had clearance problems. I ended up using a screwdriver to rotate it to where the tool would fit, and using the tool as much as I could (gotta justify the purchase somehow), and got down to business installing new pads into the bracket (which was mounted back up by now).

I don’t have a completed pic, but needless to say, it rides, stops, and sounds better now. Also, I know I had a stud out in one of the pics. I wanted to see if the car had extended studs. Which is my way of saying,
“Watch where you swing the hammer when knocking a rusty rotor loose.”
After I put it back in, the brake job, normally a 30 minute job, tops, turned into a 4-hour ordeal, involving stuck rotor screws, drilling out one of the screws with a dull bit (need to invest in a better drill set), and a stuck piston. But it’s done.

Happy modding!

Isn’t that typical? Lol

20yr old pads… Uncorrected DC suspension… it sounds like you saved this Integra from its past owner.

Sucks to hear about the wreck though man.

Did you take any pictures of where you went off? As much as it sucks to fight a ticket, sometimes it can be worth it.

If you didn’t damage any city/state property, you may be in a good position. If the cop wasn’t present when you actually went off road, he is simply guessing at your approximate speed… which is BS he should not ticket you for that.

BUT, you can be ticketed with Failure To Maintain Control of Vehicle in these situations… being that you were ticketed for excess speed, you may be able to get out of it all together.

Best of luck sir.

Careless driving. F’n ridiculous, because any car would’ve gone off there. The corner was clear until the very last part of the exit, when the rear tires are under the most stress. When they broke loose, it was going off, one way or another.

I did save it from an irresponsible owner, sounds like. But I haven’t saved it yet. Ned to work out suspension.
