Is that the reflection of the flash on the foglight, or did you paint the lens yellow? I can tell when you have the foglight on becuase it is much brithter. I have seen other one piece headlights, and didn’t notice the yellow when the lights were off. Looks very nice though! Would you say that doing the ghetto type R lights is harder than clearing 92-93 tailights? Any problems with leaking and fogging?

Thanks for the compliments…
No I haven’t painted the lens yellow. It appears like that because I have taken the glare guard out. Now there is nothing to cover the yellow “condom” so its colour is reflected by the chrome housing.
Was it hard you ask? Well it all depends on your patience. I’d say it was long.
And no I don’t have any problem with condensation. It’s all in how you reseal the lens.
If anyone has more questions feel free to email me instead of bringing back an old thread
I am using this method except instead of painting mine black I am painting mine the same color as the car, I have 1 headlight done, it looks tight! Thanks for the tip! I will post pics when I am done.
hey LL, quick question what kind of paint did u use to paint hte housing? and top of the lens? just wondering if the paint you used is able to withstand the heat of the bulbs after while? just wondering. and how many coats? did u prep the are of the inner housing in anyway to make sure it was clean or the top of the lens? just wondering, cause i’m planning on doing this for another member and i want to get allt he major points done

It told LL to at least use Dupli-color engine paint which is readily available at any Wal-Mart store. It can easily withstand high temps.
well I guess this thread really doesn’t wanna die…

Yup, OZ told me to use that paint and it worked great. So far no problem. Basically any kind of high temperature paint would do. I did one coat only. Just clean the inside with some kind of a mild detergent and make sure it’s clean and dry. That’s pretty much it. It doesn’t have to look that nice because you don’t really see it in detail anyway. Remember that the lens is not completely see through.
Don’t use any detergent to clean the chrome housing. It MAY damage it. Just use some dampened towel carefully. Also when you take off the masking tape after painting do it slowly. Some of the chrome paint came off with the tape.
Hey man, im plannin to do the black housing work on my car also. My one-piece are suppose to come in a few days. Before i start though, is there any quick advice you have for me? Since i’ve never tried anything like this before and i can only afford one pair of headlights right now, lol. Another thing i need to ask of you is, what kind of sealant did u use after you took everything apart, cause i know dat sealants are very important. Also, i only have a blow dryer and not a heat gun, how long should i “heat” it up. Lastly, is it hard to take out the glare guards? Since im plannin to do just bout wat you did to yours, except that ill prob. get some hyper white or cool blues for my headlights. thx for readin all this newbie junk.

ok I’ll try to go through this very fast…
the only advice I can think of right now is to be careful with the corners when you separate the lens. They’re very fragile and can crack easily. The sealant I use was the silicone sealant by General Electric called silicone II. Again it was THE_OZ’s idea. He’s the one who did the write up in the teg tips. Look there for more info.
I’m not sure how a blow dryer will do. I really recommend a heat gun. And be careful, the grey housing is pretty easy to melt. Heat each area up for about 3 secs.
The glare guard can be taken out easily. There are some screws, that’s it. (teg tip)
THanks for all the info. I just got my one pieces at a yard, and they are in good condition. Have all the bulbs except for one of the corners didn’t even have the bulb or plug. Now after doing some searches it seams that my stock bulb and plug will just fit for the corners, is this correct (i know the fog and headlight wont’)? I can’t wait to try this mod and maybe do a little variation.
Hey LL COOL B what’s up ? those headlights look great! How many tries did it take?by the way thanks for the grill I ll send you a pick I chromed it.It looks great!
k, thx alot man, im sure i would’ve done something stupid like melt it hehe, or break the housing, im not use to fragile stuff. But before i end this, i gotta give u props for it, wether u came up w/the idea or just carried it out, all i can say is dat ITS TIGHT!!!

Thanks for the compliments. I actually got it the first time. I kinda new exactly what I wanted so things went nicely. And no problem for the grill.

Hey man, did you paint over part of the corner lens here? I just bought these and I don’t have a chrome part that sticks out past the corner light???
Also, one of my lights gasket thing (like a rubber piece that goes on the outside of the lens to help prevent water leakage) is kinda old. Is there a good replacement? I think this part goes over the corner lens part.

Yes I painted it because I didn’t want the chrome paint UNDER the lens to show. I now find it to be too big and don’t like it that much. I guess you can leave it the way it is.
I don’t think there is any replacement part for the rubber thingy. Just clean it and use some silicone to stick it back.
Here is a pic of my color matched re housing headlights, using LL’s paiting method, I just used Red instead of black, thanks LL, I will post more pics later.
