The New P/S Removal Thread (56K warning)

sweet! ok quick question, so if i take out the springs and the valves but leave the two with the rod going accross it, i will b ok? ill still have a good “feel” oh and im kinda lost with this one, is there a problem with just looping the lines and leaving the sensor hanging there? (cuz im too broke to buy plugs :bang: and i dont kno what to do with the sensor  )

I’m a bit confused what sensor you mean. The sensor I’m talking about is actually one of the plungers in side the valve body. When the weekend comes around I’m going to re-do mine and I’ll take lots of picts and maybe even a video to show the before and after play in the steering…

Oh and in answer to your question the reason people remove the valve body internals is to make the steering a little easier. It’s so the ps fluid can travel through the valve body with less resistance.

Do you mean the speed sensor that is connected to the tranny?

yeah you don’t wanna remove the speed sensor in the tranny. your speedo cable kinda goes inside that. kinda need it.

no no. if i remember correctly the pressure hose that goes to the power steering pump, if u trace it back theres a sensor on it, by the firewall. does that thing need to be there?

Mine is long gone and I have not had any problems…

that sensor is just the pressure sensor that is part of the speed-regulated system. remember the DA p/s system doesn’t even provide power assistance over something like, what, 30 mph? it’s variable, not constant. only power assists at lower speeds.

Your, right it’s a pressure sensor. Your also right with the ps system only working below 30mph. The system itself though, does not need that sensor to function, since it is completely mechanical.

awesome thanks guys

SwedBoy2999- I had the exact problems with gutting the internals out of the valve body. Before i had hardly any play in the wheel. After, i had a good 1-1.5 in. in play in the wheel, its actually dangerous to drive at high speeds. I replaced my outer tie rods and tightended up the 14mm main nut near the vavle body and also checked all joints on the steering column. Nothing seemed to help at all. Could you please take a picture of what items you kept in order to have no play in the wheel. Thanks so much.

bump for a response

Bump for pics and review of replacing the middle thing and showing that Mark is trying to kill us all with his shitty advice.

oh if i want you dead, it won’t be death by steering.

it’ll be a projectile no more than .308 inches in diameter through the base of the skull where the neck meets the spine. :naughty:

i pictured a head rolling while i read that

rolling, not so much.

splattered all over the concrete, a little moreso.

Alright negoroes, warez the pics?

I rebuilt the valve body last night and took lots of picts… I’ll post the them later today. Best part is that the play in the steering is gone now!

Daamn! A fix, I know LOTS of people had this issue, will have to see what you did, and try to do it tommorow/tuesday. :hugs:

Valve Body Unit Assembly DIY

There it’s done. I would have posted it here, but it said there were too many pictures.

SwedBoy2999, Outstanding! The detailed close-ups are “repair manual quality”. I was kinda unsure about doing this but you made it look so simple!

Here’s my question to all who have performed this mod already…Like I said, I was not planning to do this because it didn’t seem like it was worth the trouble, but I’ve got plenty of time since the car’s not daily driven. The main reason that I want to do it is to clean up my engine bay. What I need to know is how much of a diiference is there in the overall “feel” of the steering? Does it hinder high-speed performance at all? I want to get into autox this year but I also love wangan-style highway blasting! I’ve had my G2 for 7 years now and I’m used to the power steering. I suppose, because of it’s age, the steering would occasionally lock-up when driving in the rain or if I drove through a deep puddle(I’m thinking it’s because water had splashed onto the belt causing it to slip on the pump-very annoying when in the middle of a turn!) This would no longer be an issue with the conversion. How do you feel about YOUR conversions?

I am 100% in lovew with my “manual” rack, it is as easy toi drive as normally, with added road feel and subtracted issues. If this fixes the minor initial sterring play, I will probably have sex with my car. :naughty:
