The ongoing progress of a $200 shell.

Hello all, I am a big fan of DA’s/DB’s and always will be. I decided to share my progress. Hard work and dedication has paid off and I am pleased with the results. Here goes.

The car that inspired me, my uncles DA back in day. I was 14 when he started building it.

My first DA
A 91GS, ripped leather seats, a few water leaks, and power windows that didn’t have much power. I didn’t care, I loved this car.

Never thought I would end up marrying her lol.

I had my car for 3 years before a guy making an illegal U turn, decided to smash it. I stripped what I could, but my DA was gone.

Knowing I would get another DA in the future I decided to rebuild a B18A. It was nothing crazy, OEM parts and some head work was enough to keep me happy.

I had finally found a rolling shell. An unintentional drive through an alley was fate. I was ridiculed by family and friends for buying it. I decided at that moment I would shut the nay sayers up, and shut them up hard.
DAY 1

A freshly built engine was dropped in, and my addiction had finally begun.

I drove around with a flat black hood and ditched the steelies. This lasted a few months.

By spring I was on a mission to have wheels, skirts, and a lip. A free set of EK side skirts, an ebay lip, and a coincidental find and purchase of racing hart wheels, made a dramatic change to the look of my car.

I was content, but my focus changed. I needed paint, and I needed it bad. My Uncle was starting up his auto body business, and made an offer I couldn’t refuse. “ Buy the paint, help with the body work, and I will do the rest for free.” That same day I saw an M3 drive by me. The odd, yet bright blue shining in the sun was beautiful. I wanted that color. Laguna Seca Blue became the color of choice.

Body work had begun the day before a big local car show. Friends and fam wanted to see us at that show. Needless to say we got no sleep.

My Uncle spraying.

The final result.

At the show/unveiling

I drove around like this for another year or so before I got bored.

Craigslist is a beautiful thing. A broken DA Mugen bumper was available in NY. My uncle was making a trip out there, and offered to pick it up. The bumper was in rough shape. Fortunately the repairs yielded excellent results. I also painted the Racing Harts black.

This same pic was submitted to Honda Tuning, and ended up in the October 2009 Grassroots section. I installed Type R style seats (never again) and Spoon style mirrors.

The DA remained this way until I grew tired of 17“ wheels. I ordered 15“ Nippon MA86 wheels in 2010, switched the mirrors, and kept the look until recently.

I need more power!
A Garrett T3 made its way into my life.

I unfortunately spun some bearings, that ended the saga of the B18A.
Enter the B20b.

Mind the wire/hose mess, this was literally a day after the swap.

Satisfied with the performance, I refocused on the exterior and Interior.
Painted the wheels .

Fast forward to present day.
Added Wings west side skirts, and an OEM optional rear lip. I knew a man that had them stored, he never wanted to sell them to me. I finally recived a call that he would sell them for $80.00, he needed cash asap. Yes $80.00, I was extremely happy with the rare opportunity.

I could no longer stand the sh!t replica seats. Corbeau Forza arrived and changed my driving experience.

A bit dirty, but I daily it. This is the DA as of now.

Thanks for looking. Future plans: Painting the car solid Laguna Seca Blue, Hiro wing or Mugen style wing. new wheels, lower the car more, V-Tec head, 1 pieces, traction bar, energy suspension upgrades, Mugen steering wheel, Mugen shift knob, relocate battery to the rear. etc.

just damn…WOWWWWWWWWWWWW

LOVE the mugen peddles. So sick and feel amazing.

Your car is also amazing! Great work! Hope I can get to this point one day.

That is a flat out badass turn around!
Congrats on making that pile of shit into a pearl.

Wow great story!! I really like how the new one came out, nice work! What kind of power?

Thanks everyone. I look back and can’t believe how far it has come. As for the HP, I have yet to dyno it. I am hoping to do this once I find, and swap the head.

Would you happen to have any pictures of how those EK side skirts fit at the door line? Like with it open. Or maybe even how you cut and mounted them?

Glad I kept these in my photobucket. Here ya go.

As you can see I did not cut off the plastic on the top of the skirt, that most people remove. Doing this will kill the rigidity of the skirt and will cause it to sag. the skirt can be sandwiched between the door and the sill.

This where I put the screws in.

Inside the EK side skirts there are little square tabs, you will need to cut those out. Shape the end of the skirt (fender side) to sit as flush with the fender as possible. Overlap your skirt with the mud flap, to conceal where you cut the end of the skirt. If the bottom of the door rubs the skirt, you can A: Move the door up a bit for clearance or B: Sand the plastic lip on the skirt to try and stop it.

I hope that helps.:cross:

I don’t comment much on builds but wow. Amazing job on this turn around, looks great! way to shove it in their face lol

Thank you so much for posting those mock-ups!

So you sandwiched the skirt between the door and skirt and held it down with the one screw in the middle, then the 2 screws on the ends?

I don’t understand how it fits so flush on the lower quarter panel if you didn’t remove that plastic part on top of the skirt.

This really gave the meaning to " anyone can buy a new car, but it takes a real enthusiast to breathe life into an old one"
i tip my hat to you sir

I took some pics, hopefully it can clear things up.
For the rear quarter portion of the skirt, you only need to remove a plastic tab along the inside of the skirt. The plastic is already cut straight from Honda aside from that plastic tab. That is why it sits flush, and holds with a screw to the rear wheel well. For the front you will need to remove a little bit of plastic on top, so that it becomes flush with the fenders. The rest of the plastic is sandwiched between the door.

This is the inside of the skirt towards the rear, you can see where the tabs used to be.

Back of skirt with screw hole. As you can see it’s straight, the tab was removed.

Front of skirt. This was the portion that was laying flush with the fender. Some material on the top was removed to make it fit properly. (It’s been a while since I did this, sorry for the confusion) I also remember adding a second screw to hold it on the sill. The mud flap goes over this portion.

Very much appreciated. Thank you. I shocked alot of people lol.

Thank you sir. My thoughts exactly.

The paint job looks great. What kind of prep did you do for the painting after the body work?

WOW!! so well done. and 80 for the rare lip, what a great deal.

Thank you, truthfully I don’t know much about body work. I merely followed my uncles lead. He would tell me what grits to sand with, inspect, used tack cloth and moved on. The paint is currently in need of a good wax/buffing. Meguiars ultimate quick wax tends to hide most of it.

Thank you sir. I was extremely happy with the price.

any idea as to what body kit that was on your uncle’s DA in the first pics? Mine had skirts that came up high like that on the fender and quarter panels, and I am hoping to find a set similar so I can just reattach em rather than have to bondo the screw holes and do a ton of body work.

your ride is flipping sweet. I love seeing stuyff like this as it is all helping me gather ideas for my build when I get to doing the body work.

Thank you, best of luck on your build. My uncles kit was the “Aggressor Type 2” front bumper, “Kombat” side skirts and rear bumper from VIS racing.
