Things to Change Before going Turbo

I have a b18a1 just wondering what things I might want to replace before going turbo? Also what would be some good compression numbers to consider if you engine is worth turboing?

I did some reading on compression testing and it seems like it would be pretty easy and I’ve been curious how my engine is doing. They go for pretty cheap don’t they at a auto store?

Any comments are appreciated

If your talking basic maint, clutch, axles, timing belt, water pump, plugs, wires…

yeah thats what i meant basic mantinence. Whats the average compression numbers of a strong running b18a1??

i think haynes/helms says 180 would be perfect, so within 10% of that should be sufficient, a leakdown test should be done as well (ive never done one) and those results should be within 10% as well

cool thats what I wanted to know. Also I did a quick search on leakdown test and didn’t find much. Do I have to bring it to a shop for that and what is all involved in doing it?

if all ur cylinders are pretty close around 10% of each other there is no need for a leakdown test if one cylinder is way off then do a leakdown test and see what is wrong with that cylinder

ok, where can I pick up the compression tester canadian tire or ebay or something?

go to sears, they have them thats where i got mine.

make sure you change your water pump, I didn’t on mine, and now it’s leaking. I’m 20,000KM shy of a timing belt and water pump change though.

princesse auto 19.99 cdn

20 bucks at princess auto? hmm thats about a half our 40 min drive away. I might check Canadian Tire even tho there usually more expensive. I once paid $6 for ONE replaced ment tail light… Next day went to walmart and seen almost the identical bulb TWO for $2.50 go figure

i didnt do any maintence. If it aint broke dont fix it. Change ur oil. That is it.

yeah I change my oil at the 5000km interverals the only thing that im worried about is if the head gasket is blown or on its what other then that the engine seems bullet proof

put the turbo on and have nuff money to fix shit as it happens, no reason to put a head gasket or new clutch or some shit if the first week ur have turbo and ur 3rd gear goes or ur motor blows up. Fix it as it breaks. LS heads are 50-100, LS motors are 250-300 for b18a, 1200 for a NEW b18b. most of the shit isnt worth fixing

well I bought the car with 140k and there is now 160k on it. I should at least change the timing belt and water pump I think because I have no idea when it was done last… And I would need a new clutch because mine slips now when i shift gears at high rpms.
haha this guy was in my car the other day and I took him for a little ride and he asked if had a short shifter and yet I don’t its all stock. Should I take that as a complement? because I kinda take it as one. He is pretty much saying my shifts are clean and quick.

Compton: where do you see b18a for 250-300? All the ones I seen are like 800 I think and then plus shipping? For 250-300 I’d buy a new motor with 100,000km less on it and get my friend to help put it in since everything is already there…

250-300 is a motor with 150k + (miles) on it.

if u wanna spen $ u can get a b18b motor for under a grand with less than 50k on it easy. Fix the clutch first, if it needs replaced right now fix it. My clutch holds great with 11 psi. Stock clutch. “a redline a day keeps the carbon away”

so your runnin a b18a stock clutch with turbo at 11psi right now? all stock internals??

Relocate ur battery.

It will do u good as far as ur turbo piping. I personally plan on usin that space and connecting a small air filter and tube to the turbine. I have no faith in just putting a metal screen over ur turbine. Small rock/splash spells disaster.

If u have some car audio it will help you too.

If u have some car audio it will help you too.

how

cuz then you wont have to run the amp power through the engine bay and stuff and it will be a shorter cable so less loss of power, etc. not a big deal though…
