You took my post wrong. I have no idea what “cups” you’re talking about.
I have had my omnis since a month after they came out.
Sorry for the confusion… what are cups though?

he’s talking about the lower collars.
which one?
those were on a drag car right? their the drag spec omni’s?
yea
i have omni’s full sport coil over set and have nothing to complain about. I’ve had them for a couple of months now, and the ride has been awesome. I have hit nasty dips on the freeway @75 mph and nothing happened. I’m lowered about 3" all around and the ride is outstanding. I’ve been to the canyons and came back impressed. This is a good set up and i would recommend it.
if you read the thread linked, the reason is that they were not pre-loaded before being installed. Omni has this step for a reason, and if you don’t follow it, they shouldn’t be liable. It’s part of the isntall process, so follow it. Its like changing you’re oil, if the filter specifically says to torque it to a certain spec. If you don’t follow the directions and you are driving down the freeway and you’re motor blows due to oil starvation, who is to blame? Not them, but you for not installing it properly. same thins applies to this case, except the shop should be held liable for not pre-loading them.
You have to preload a damper or else it will cause a catastrophic faliure? If you belive that, I’ve got some land to sell you.
Yeah it looks like a clear design flaw. You cannot expect a section of aluminum that thin to hold up to tensile/torsion/compression stresses from all angles, at least not for a long amount of time. I only read the first 3 or 4 pages of that thread though, did they ever find out if it was a sudden failure or related to fatigue?
I read the whole thing the other night, no conclusions. until kteller can provide some proof that lack of preload can cause that, I am gonna say he is just spouting the company line.
who is the other guy in that thread who sells a rebadged version of the same setup?
If you look at other designs of that type, that portion where the omni failed, others have added more material or designed differently to be stronger
So it looks like just a design flaw by omni, i know the material they used is probably stronger then normal, but seriously, being that thin im sure it was gonna fail, esp used for drag racing under stress loads of 400-800 hp cars trying to transfer that power to the wheels and the loads thats transfered back and fourth
I’m gonna sound like a noob here, but what exactly is preloading the coilovers?
Didn’t someone mention that there was indeed a manufacturing problem with material thickness? I recall reading that the material was supposed to be milled to 10mm thickness rather than 1mm.
tightening down the spring on the shock before it’s installed. on your typical coilovers, the spring is shorter, and so if the car flies and the damper extends all the way, there is a gap between the spring and tophat. it can slap the top when the car goes back down, rattle, or get a little dislodged. OR if the spring is more stuck to the top, it will lift out of its seat.
think of a stock spring in a shock compared to a lowering spring in the same stock shock. the stock one fits, the lowering spring has a big space on top.
i still don’t know how preloading would keep the forces from the cup?
and i wonder if others got 10mm thick cups or did they suddenly discover this flaw…
for the 4-5 months that i’ve had these coilovers, i never had a problem and i did also inspect my collars after seeing that thread on h-t… but for peace of mind and living in jersey with crappy roads, i had omni send me the new collars… i just got them today so if its not a thousand degrees out tm, i’ll put them in after i get outta work… but from what i hear, they are selling the coilovers with the new collars rather then the old ones so you shouldnt have anything to worry about and if you do get the old collars, a simple email to omni resolves everything
That’s what I instantly found out about Omni, excellent customer service. I had a lower collar (AKA cup) that wasn’t turning on the ridges within. I guess it was stuck so I told them about it, and sent my shock in. They gave me a completely new one despite all the scratch marks on the collar from me trying to get it to budge.
What I really want to know is if they’ll send you new cups now before they break… what happens when they’re broken and you ask for new cups? They’ll give you the run around like this guy and mention preload?
If that’s the case I’m sending mine in.
EDIT: Was just on www.omnipowerusa.com and noticed they don’t even have an application list for the DA? What’s the deal?
i’ll be measuring my collars this weekend while i change my oil. but from looking at the pics of the new collars on HT it looks like the DA ones are the same except for the new lip on the top of the collar. we shall see.
btw, i also havent had any problems with mine and i got mine back in the beginning of the year.
doesn’t Yuri have those?
correct maral, i was the first with the DA setup.
