hey guys if you havent seen my other thread i have a question…(i would just edit the previous question but then i dont want that thread getting one sided so it would be easier for me if i just posted a new one for this question) im gonna be boosting this winter and im planning on ACT 6 puck clutch so i wanna know i have an ls long geared tranny and a 92-93 gs-r short geared tranny. which one would be better for boost??
the one that keeps you in your powerband.
in all honesty, its probably going to be the gsr one in the end.
plot the powerband and the ratios in the gearbox, apply common sense and make the choice. do your dyno with the one you have first, then see what you need to do to make the most of what your engine produces.
whats your engine? i prefer the long geared ys1 for a b18a/b and the gsr ys1 for any vtec engine. unless your revving the b18a/b pretty high then the short geared ys1 would be the best.

I will not feed you bs info but I will tell you what i know from what I’ve seen. LS trans is always the key to a turbo build. Even when VTEC the turbo makes up for the longer gears. In some cases my old boss used Type R trans cause of the LSD and reving to 9500 helps when you got shorter gears. So really it’ll just be prefarance unless you want to have custom gear sets made for your setup. If you are going to use an LS with only 7k red then I would def stick with a long gear trans. Also use the 92-93 big spline trans cause I’ve destroyed every small spline I’ve ever put in my car. Don’t know if it helps any but good luck. I know when I finally slap a turbo to the car im keeping my longer gears.
I am boosting and I am definitely keeping the LS long gears.
when i had my turbo ls i had the long geared trans and that was fine (large spline because like 1Slw4Dr said the small spline just doesnt last). now that im ls/vtec turbo revving a lot higher the ls trans was just way to long with the higher rev’s so i picked up a ys1 gsr, put in an mfactory lsd. up to now i like it.
I am all LS turbo, non vtec, and I can say that weather your Vtec or not, a short geared tranny with the same given power will out perform a long geared, so I would have to go against the grain and say get a GSR or custom like mine, GSR 1-4, LS 5th and Hydro B16 FD with OBX LSD. never given me any problems and I am now able to hit 11’s consistantly. there was a discussion on this in the FI forum awhile ago, so a simple search could have answered what you are asking now.
