turbo + cable tranny?

i was talking to someone that he told me that the cable trans wont hold up under boost if its driven hard.

I plan on making 250-300whp, can the cable transmition hold up with that much power? And i dont plan babying it the entire time. i will do autoX and take it on the track.

i did search and couldnt find anything

Honda tranny’s are pretty solid. At that HP, you’ll be fine. If you are constantly beating on it, its going to wear faster like anything else, but its probably not going to explode or anything. As far as I know, cable trannys are just as strong as hydro ones, cable ones are just older.

There are articles here and there about the different strengths of the transmissions in all the B series motors. If you beat on it expect synchros to wear. You should at least use a decent clutch and OEM or race fluids.

Automatic transmissions on the other hand, they suck. Won’t even hold up to an LS VTEC motor. Any motor pushing over 150HP and the auto is shit. Honda has never made a good automatic transmission. Even on the newer acura CL/RL/TL with the sport shift crap the dealership recognizes that they suck. The car may have like a 36k warranty but the dealer will offer a 100k warranty on the auto shit transmissions.

ill try to find those articles.

i plan on using a ACT stage 2 clutch with a findaza flywheel. and there is no way i would do this with an automatic transmition

the stiffer your clutch, the more wear the tranny will see. what kills trannies even faster is slicks. something in your drivetrain has to give.

hey, let me start by lettin u know my setup, i have a 92 DA with a swapped jdm gsr motor in it, built head and customized greddy 18g turbo kit, im makin high 200’s for whp and around 220 for torque, been boostin daily now for over a year with same ls cable trans and its been workin great, no grinds or nothin, i get on it a lot also and its been flawless, i love it and wouldnt agree with someone if he or she was to tell me that a hydro tranny is stronger in any way than my cable tranny, yes a hydro tranny seems to last longer and be stronger but u gotta also remember, most hydro trannies that people are using are also a few years newer then our cable trannies…i love cable and still woop ass on any hydro tranny owner who talks shit…save urself money and time from doin the swap and stick with cable, just make sure u find a good tranny in good condition if ur lookin to buy, put some good oil in it and change it frequently, ur all set. take care

i dont mind the cable tranny except the tb clip…i’ve broke 3 since i’ve been turbo’d

tb clip?

the throwout bearing clip

wouldn’t that have to do with not having the right clutch?

i dont think so…not 100% sure but the clip doesn’t touch the clutch so? it works with the throwout bearing & fork. here’s a pic:

its #5. look how little that thing is…it moves everytime you clutch, i’m sure a stage 3 pressure plate doesn’t help the normal wear but still…there’s gotta be a solution. :nana: gotta drop the transmission for a $4 part…and i think others had this problem too

yes but if yo have a stage 3 clutch kit compared to a stage 1 clutch kit, i think the throwout bearing would be different aswell. but not 100% sure.

and if you are right there has to be some way of preventing the clip from breaking.

The clip shouldn’t eve break… Everybody uses the same old factory clip. As do I and I run the Clutchmasters stage 4 with 6 puck race disc which I drag race frequently. I would just stick with the cable tranny. What year cable tranny is it? the 90-91 or the 92-93? The 92-93 has the shaft versus the 90-91, but otherwise almost identical.

they shouldn’t break but they are so  however, good news is my clutch cable broke and not the clip haha. i dunno like i said others had to replace theirs too and i got mine from acura so its oem. the tranmission itself is SOLID…holding 10psi gsr all day as a daily driver…just the other parts on it isnt :read: lol

i love the cable tranny feels so buch better than the hydro. i just had 2 put on a new clutch for my jdm y1 tranny went though 8 clutches and couldnt find 1 2 fit. 1 month later finaly found 1 in japan an had it sent over. all because of a popped spring

I think it’s debateable. I always too said Cable was so much better because you are directly connected to the clutch lever where as with hydro you’re not. But my other car is a 94 GSR and I think both have their ups and downs. For simplicity, I’d take the cable clutch tho. No both with bleeding fluid:D
