Turbo Install Problems

I just sold my old turbo in favor of a Precision GT3257E. I installed the turbo just yesterday and i went to start it up. When I first started it up, the wheel wasn’t spinning, so I immediately shut it down. I figured the turbo wasn’t spinning because no oil had reached the turbo before I had shut it down, so I pulled one of the spark plugs and cranked the car to prime the oil feed. I then reconnected the plug and tried to start it back up once again. Sure enough, the turbo started to spin, but was spinning rather slowly. I tried to let it idle for a little while longer, but about 3 min. after I had started it up, smoke started to come from the engine bay around the manifold area. Once I saw the smoke, I once again immediately shut it down. My oil return line comes off of the turbo at about a 45* angle away from the oil pan, so I used a 90* fitting to redirect the return toward the oil pan. the return kinda looks like this from a side profile:
{turbo}

====[oil pan]

The return has no kinks in the line and the diameter of the return at its smallest point is 1/2", which is about -8AN from one of the previous threads I found when searching. That thread also said that 1/2" was the minimum diameter for a return line, quoted from Corky Bell’s Maximum Boost. I also had to buy a new feed line fitting for the turbo and my friend gave me his -3AN fitting. All of the fittings and lines are -4AN on my original lines. I was hoping someone could shed some light onto the reason why my engine bay is smoking from the turbo/manifold area. Any help would be appreciated.

I think you are being overly paranoid.

Either you spilled some oil on one of the runners of your manifold or you have a slight exhaust leak.

Just boost the MOFO!

xenocron, you’re the man! you were right. the smoke was coming from the thermo wrap around the downpipe. i guess it does that whenever the wrap is new or maybe its oil that was on my hands which rubbed off onto the wrap. i am now boosting and this gt32 is great! much better than the previous turbo.

I just remember how it was the first time i boosted my shit…the number of thoughts of “ok what did i forget or what did i fuck up” run rampant.

Same thing when i tuned someone elses car for the first time…just got to get over the initial fear.

Give her hell…and be prepared to learn when you need to fix things later.
