Hey I used to have a link to a post that pieced together a awsome tranny but the site has moved and I have lost it. I was curious if you guys could give me an idea of a good transmision or combination of transmisions to run on a 550 whp turbo setup. I currently have a b16 and am getting qualife LSD.
i would use a long geared ls trans… but thats me. i would like to keep it in the power band as much as possible.
It depends what you plan on using it for. Longer gears are better for daily driving. 550 whp is a rediculous amount of power, so regaurdless of the trans, you will have NO traction at just about any speed, so it really doesnt matter, lol.
it will be daily driven but also wanna do the 1/4 every once in a while
Surely there is someone out there with insane power output that runs a function to control traction. :worry:
Tchleung is using a short geared cable transmission with a Quaife LSD; he has 400whp. He has no worries with traction (except in wet conditions) with 225/45/17 drag radials; he drives the car daily.

Other than traction bars and LSD, the only other option is slicks/drag radials. Wheelie bars help too, but probably arent too street friendly;)
gsr ys1 turbo ls here
u dont have to boost when u drive btw
but when boosting it sucks to have to hit 5th gear lol
I’m just trying to find out if I should take a short geared tranny and swap a couple gears out or what.

If I remember correctly, there are functions you can run through tuning programs to incorporate traction control.

honestly if you are running that much hp and daily driving, use an ls tranny. you will get annoyed at highway driving with anything tighter geared, i know i did. im using an ls trans, and if i shift at 8k i come back into gear around 5500 give or take, which is still at full boost and in vtec, so who cares. also with 550whp you will be trapping in the 130mph range, which will still be in 4th if you rev it out to around 8500, but youd have to shift into 5th with other trannys
I don’t care bout daily driving being annoying I have a b16 right now. I drive at 75 at 5000 rpms so i’m used to it i’m just looking for the best tranny to get me down the 1/4 and still be able to drive daily
i have a b16 tranny on my ls motor and i love it. gives me a top speed of like 130.
Use the LS tranny. at that power the longer gears will be much more usable than worrying about a powerband. ive seen several ls/vtec turbo setups in mags and whatnot, and they almost all use the ls tranny.
i definately wouldn’t worry about running an ls tranny with that much power, i had an ls tranny on my old (pretty much stock) gsr powered da and i didn’t mind it at all. 3rd to 4th was a pretty big drop in rpm tho. im going back to this setup in my new db1.
if you are building a 550hp setup why not go custom gears? once my 600+hp setup is done i think im going straight cut 2nd-4th gears and ls or custom 5th depending on my final gear.
ya i’m asking what custom gears i should run?
give gear speed a call
what type of car is it? mainly drag but also street? or autox too?
probably mostly drag and street with occasional auto x
