Turbo or GSR/ Type R jdm

Hey guys, wanted some info on a situation I’m having. Cutting right to it, I’ve been told going turbo on my car ( 1991 b18a1 ) would be the best route since its gonna cost about the same as a gsr or type r motor and tranny…then if i got the motor id be smogging it ( California ) but wouldn’t with a turbo ofcourse… so what should I do? Should I get the turbo but if so do I need to rebuild and/or beef it up or can I bolt on and go? And is it worth the immense money, effort, and time to swap n smog ? Need help… FYI was thinking turbonetics or greedy which would give me about 70+ HP and the swaps only worth about 50. And with turbo id go better intake manifold too…thanks

Smogging or BAR’ing either way is going to be a pain in the ass.

You’d have to smog your car without the turbo, then install everything… and be prepared to go back completely to stock next year for smog again… Which is fine and good if you don’t mind doing the labor. But the other issue is, the turbo system is going to cause accelerated wear on your motor, which is going to make it harder and harder to pass smog. And as you said, if the motor has high mileage (as most 20yr old cars do) then it may not last too terrribly long under much boost.

Doing a proper Type-R or GS-R swap and BAR’ing it would be a better/easier option in my opinion. Not only would it be 100% legit, the motor should have quite a bit less mileage on it if bought from a reputable source. It might be more of a pain to begin with, but being able to smog it every year and have no issues in that respect, is worth it imo.

Or swap/BAR, then save for turbo and then just deal with returning the swap to BAR status each year for smog :stuck_out_tongue:

Well smog is only every 2 years and i don’t have to till November 2012 Reg is every year …bit yea I’ve also thought of that but they do make carb legal turbo kits. My motors only 95k btw ;).

Then? Boost. A healthy LS should be able to hande 8-9psi and still be reliable.

Lol so would b18b1 equipment work on my a1?

Boost is the fastest and cheapest way to make power… I put together a turbo kit for a b18b1 on 10 pounds and it made 220/ 163 boosting it everyday and tracking it ran a 12.6

yes b18A/B and b20 equipment are all pretty much the same or in other words can be used in conjunction with each other ie…head, crank rods, bearings, camshafts…

Great thanks smokeintegra !

And thanksto everyone else as well…I’m goin turbo !
