Up-to-date cluster/climate control LED conversion.

how do you remove the glove box? dose anyone know?

 1. Open glovebox.

 2. Remove two screws on front(one on each side by hinges)

 3. Remove two screws on bottom of inner glovebox.

 4. Remove two screws on top of inner glovebox, by latch-loop.

 5. Pull glovebox straight out, disconnect light harness before fully removing glovebox from dash.

 6. Remove two screws holding light assembly to side of glovebox, if it’s the bulb you’re wanting to get to.

It’s pretty self-explanatory if you just open the glovebox, remove anything you have stored in there, and look around for the screws.

Sorry to bother you again, but your ‘top of cluster’ and ‘back of cluster’ pictures are the same.

Thanks for the heads-up. It’s fixed now.

Hey guys, I realize all the bulb types are outlined in the thread but i just need to make sure as i’m a little confused of what to buy.

Is this right?

Two (2) WLED-x-x LED bulb (in 120 degree)
Four (4) 74-x Wedge Base LED bulb
Four (4) 1.5 Instrument LED bulb (Standard 5mm T1.5-x)

Thanks in advance.

Just did the led swap and I think I did something wrong because my cluster lights are dimmer than when it was stock…

Whites are stock and the amber is after.

Anyone have any ideas?

And yes, the dimmer is all the way up.

Edit: All the buttons on the left side don’t light up and the defroster don’t light up, but they all work. I definitely did something wrong. Anyone have ideas?

SBL bulbs are polarized, which means they only work when installed the right way. Your bulbs are obviously lighting up, which means they’re installed properly. If they’re too dim it has to be either the dimmer switch, or the bulb just plain doesn’t shine that bright.

As I have no experience with SBL’s amber bulbs, there’s not much advice I could give you in regards to what they should look like. I used blue on all my conversions.

EDIT: Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but when did you view your cluster? If you didn’t view it in a very dark garage, or outside at night…try it. My blue lights are real dim in any sort of ambient light, but once night-time hits the dash has an awesome/bright blue glow.

The pics I took were in the parking lot… which were mildly bright, so I guess that wasn’t a good place to test the brightness. Dimmer switch is all the way up as you can see in the pics.

Took it out for a night drive just now and yeah, it’s still dimmer than when it was stock so I’m not very impressed by the swap. I’ll be taking out the cluster again next weekend, hopefully I can figure out what’s wrong.

It’s either the bulb or the dimmer switch. The fact they’re lit up shows that the swap was successful. I’m not picturing anything in between that would cause them to not put out their full output. Did you order the bulbs from SBL?

Yes I did. I’m completely stumped. Follow your write-up step by step so I don’t know what went wrong.

Does your dimmer switch work on the bulbs? Like, do they get dimmer? If it’s working, that should rule out the switch being the problem…but if you can find someone willing to loan you a switch, I’d try that.

Beyond that, the only other thing I can think of is the bulb just not being that bright. If that’s the case, that really sucks as nothing can really be done about it other than maybe returning them for refund and getting a different color…or buying amber bulbs from someone else.

Before doing anything else, check out the other cluster conversion thread here in the tips section. There’s a bunch of people in it that used the amber bulbs from SBL. Might want to look in to that and see if they had the same issue. :read:

Yeah the dimmer switch works for everything. I don’t have any spare switches and nobody drives a g2 among my friends lol.

Read the entire thread just now about the amber bulb conversion and doesn’t look like anyone has the same problem as me. I bought the leds from SBL too so I dunno what’s up. Maybe I didn’t push something in far enough.

And all my buttons from the window adjusters to my defroster don’t light up, but work lol.
Pics plz!!! I’ve been dying to see those rocker-switches done in LED, before I order some and do mine. Did you use the above-mentioned neowedge 3mm from SBL?

I wonder how blue would look…
DAYLIGHT PiCS. i sold the car in april :frowning:

all bulbs were white from super bright leds

is removing the button style climate control the same as the lever type? tried taking mine apart but i couldnt figure out how it was all connected i may just have to remove the area that holds the cd player/asktray so i can reach screws not sure though.

THe faceplate comes off, I believe 2 clips top and 2 more on the bottom, it has been a couple of years. There is a bulb that twists into the knob thing from the back. You will need to remove the dash bezel.

I used 74s in my climate controls and everthing was fine. Got mine from superbrightleds.com.

Today I swapped the bulbs in the heater controls with the 3 led 74 printed on the green pcb. They are in the same part of the web page as the regular 74’s. They are a really tight fit but they will go in and you dont have to worry about them getting loose. But be freakin careful putting them in. It would be easy to break one if not pushed straight in. You might have to shave some of the pcb to make them slide in, mine had a little nick where the pcb was cut that had to be trimmed.

Since they have 1 led on top and 1 on each side they eliminate bright and dark spots. I also lined the area under the bulbs where the light spreads out with aluminum foil. The plastic in mine had turned yellow over the years and the foil helps the light spread evenly.

Okay… so I hate to bring up this thread and kill the proverbial dead horse and I’m not intending to threadjack, but I want to absolutely make sure and double check this before I screw myself out of hard earned cash :stuck_out_tongue:

Are the T1.5 bulbs basically just a #74 bulb with a twist lock base already installed on the bulb? If that’s the case, could I just buy a #74 bulb and swap out the OEM bulb for the LED bulb in the original twist lock base??

Also, has anyone thought of doing a strip of LED lighting in the heater controls?? Would that maybe work instead of just ordering wide-angled bulbs? Just a thought.

Any thoughts or insights are greatly appreciated!!!

It’s been a while since I’ve done this, and since I’ve owned a teggy…but I’ll try to answer your question.

 1. Using the new bulbs in the old twist-lock bases may work, or they may not. I had fitment issues doing this, but I also had some fitment issues using the new twist-lock bases. Components like this are produced on such a massive scale that no two are the exact same, there are tiny differences that can cause the installation to be hit or miss. The new bulb may be too big or too small for the old twist-lock, and the new twist-lock may be too big or too small to fit in the sockets.

For tight fits you do have the option of using a razorblade or exacto knife to trim away plastic, but do it in very small amounts at a time to avoid removing too much.

For loose fits you do have the option of bending the metal tabs on the bulb(careful, these double as the LED leads and can break easily) or the twist-lock base. You can even use a drop of hot glue(glue gun + glue sticks, cheap and available from craft stores, walmart, etc) to hold the bulb or base in place.

 1. An LED strip replacing the two wide-angle bulbs for the climate controls is actually a good idea, I’ve yet to see it done but I’d imagine the finished product being an evenly-lit climate control rather than two bright spots from the two default bulb locations. I couldn’t tell you for sure if this will work or not as I have not tried, but I’d say it’s worth a shot…if you do this be sure to post up some pics of the process in here so others can try it out.
