vacuum line to wastegate came off,,overboosted :( help

my car has only been boosted for a few weeks now with all new parts and a complete engine rebuild, al i have really been doin with it since i got it runnin was just driving around makin sure all the kinks get worked out and did a few pulls every now and then…

well on friday i was doin some more checks to make sure everthing was workin well and apparently the vacuum line to the wastegate fell off without my knowing and im pretty sure my car overboosted, and know she is running like shit making a light poppin sound and there is smoke comin from somewhere behind the block.

I dont kow if maybe i blew a vaccum line or a gasket but its very frustrating mostly because its my fault there is no coolant in the oil, poil pressure i still good and it still idles fine, but it idles higher than normal now… there is no knocking or oil flowing out from anywhere so i think i lucked out in that area. If anyone has any tips or answers please chime in and if u can be nice haha, its been a long frustraing couple of days.

If there wasnt enough gas up top to compensate for the overboost, theres a very good chance you have fried your rings/pistons. The smoke coming from the back of the block is more than likely coming from the breather box area or from the port on the valve cover. If the smoke isnt clearing after some time, it might be shot.

Does it idle like a WRX?

MantisX

ya it kinda sounds like a wrx, but its set to run richer than normal so i dolnt know hoe it went lean.
and there is smoke comin from the port on the valve cover

If its constant smoke from the valve cover and it never lets up, odds are your rings are shot. The good news is, if youre putting another engine in anyway, you can drive it like that for a little while lol.

MantisX

well damnit lya its constant smoke :frowning: i guess i cant be to mad since this is my fault, but i just rebuilt this engine :frowning: it only has 4000 miles on it.

im starting to realize how much money this hobby is i might just part it out watch for parts in the other forum,

i’m not sure the problem, but what spring do you have in your waste gate? if its only a 7lbs spring it would only go that far with line on or off. if you just built your engine, it should be able to handle the boost without a problem as long as you have your ecu tuned. are you just running a fmu? what are you using for fuel management?

Im not sure if thats true. I have a tial wastegate with a 7lbs spring. My manifold melted the wastegate line once and it shot over to 12+ before I let off the gas. Luckily I had enough gas dumping for it not to lean out.

MantisX

its a tial with that had an 11 pound spring and it spiked to 15 before i saw it
:frowning:
right now i was runnin a basemapped ecu from phearable.net with dsm 450s
but it was programmed to run on the rich side,i thought.

I had a similer thing happen to me, i have a dsm 14b and 450’s, the wg line popped off and slapped the little flapper on the 14b shut, i was using an apexi neo as a boost gauge while i was waiting for my real gauge, boost shot off the MAP… litteraly, ended up frying cylinders 3 and 4. cracked the ringlandings on for pistons, shot constant smoke out of the breather on my valvecover. idles worse than a wrx and sounded just the same, i ended up puting wiseco 8.5:1 pistons and eagle h-beams in while i had the chance, your best bet is to rebuild, somethin about my experience and your story tells me stock rings dont like much boost

Stock rings love boost, but stock rings wont hold 2 psi if theres not enough gas there.

ya i finally got the head off yesterday and everything acutally looks really good, the head is fine and the gasket is no messed up or anything. but there is a a little scoring or the cylinder walls. im thinkin she went lean on me and poof it burned em…

ahh i dont want to take the motor out again. lesson learned

Build it stronger, Boost higher. Youll be glad you did. Also, any competent ecu editing software should have a boost cut setting. Make sure this is the first thing you set.

MantisX

is there such a thing as turbo specific rings? or ones better for a turbo application?

No, just different ring gaps done to hold up to boost. Any good engine builder you take it to should know whats up. I bought wisecos and used the rings that came with them. Runs great.
