VTEC tranny w/ forced induction?

I was just curious to see what you guys thought about using a VTEC transmission on a turbocharged integra… everyone says the LS tranny is more suited to turbo… but has anyone tried a VTEC transmission? Do you just have to shift way too fast with the shorter gear ratios?

I might go turbo eventually but I need to replace my tanny & I don’t know if I should get a VTEC one or an LS one… the VTEC obe would obviously be better for as long as my teg is NA…

i would go with the LS tranny, It also depends on how much boost your going with. How much power your going to run.

I am going to experiment with mixed tranny gears for my LS/Vtec Turbo 1st & 5th from an LS & 2nd, 3rd, & 4th from a vtec tranny

It’s an experiment, i am willing to try to see if gains can be made.

I’m runnin the S1 that came with my B16. It sucks for gas mileage and having to shift into 5th down the 1/4 mile. I’d stay with the LS tranny, unless you can get a GSR tranny.

Just to clarify, I would be running the turbo on a LS engine with stock internals, so I don’t think I would be boosting over 10 psi… if I got a vtec transmission I would definately put the LS 5th gear in it… any more opinions?

I have a B18a with a B16 tranny. I had this setup before i went turbo and the tranny runs out of gear. I hit rev limit in 5th gear only doing 125mph. I’m going to put my stock LS tranny back in soon and hopefully it will be better suited for the turbo setup.

Get a GSR tranny. What is the point of boosting your car and handicapping it with a long geared tranny? 65 m.p.h. at about 3800 r.p.m. on the freeway is not that bad.

VTEC tranny is great, the only thing I would do is a LS 5th gear swap.

i like the b16 y1 tranny…it’s not too short geared & still has the ls 4.266 final drive. 4th gear is good for about 118mph at 8k rpms with 205/45/16 tires. with 24.5" slicks, it’s good for about 125mph. raise the redline to 8500rpms, & that’s 131mph on slicks. i don’t think any of us on the board will need to shift into 5th with this tranny when running a 1/4 mile.

the ys1 gsr tranny is pretty good too, but you lose about 5mph for each scenario with the y1 that i just mentioned.

I would just like to add that VTEC trannies have the potential to ruin you gas mileage if you keep driving like you have an LS tranny. You’ve got to keep the revs below 4,500 which is 83-84mph with a GSR YS1. After 4,500 the engine just seems to suck gas instead of sipping it and crusing. I realize the S1 is very short, but I’m just making a point Rob.

I still get 330 miles before my gas light comes on, and yesterday I made it to 360 miles before my gas needle covered any of the red.

This is on a bone stock B18A1, Intake and RS*R exhaust, 204,000 miles. 95% of my driving is freeway and there’s about 15 trips to redline per gas tank. A trip to redline means going to redline in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and sometimes 4th to get on the freeway.

And let me add your car is hella loud, especially when you WOT that biatch!

really? noticably loud or were you two just paying close attention?

Steve: Are you runnin the B16 tranny?
Is there a difference in the B16 Y1 and B16 S1? I know lately I’ve been keeping lite on the throttle and my mileage still blows. When I was talkin to you Don(qwkteg125) you mentioned different redline speeds than me through the gears. At 70mph in 5th I’m pushin 3900 RPM(This is per the Tach and VAFC-so I’m assuming their not BOTH inaccurate) In 4th gear Redline 8K RPM, I don’t make it past 97MPH(this on both 205 x 50 x 15 street tires and 22" x 15 slicks) I could attribute my crappy gas mileage to my 12:1 FMU, but again, if I’m not under boost alot-especially during freeway driving, this shouldn’t affect me that badly. As far as swapping an LS 5th gear on an S1-that’s cool for everyday driving but remember your going to go through the traps over 100mph, if 4th gear gets you to 97mph in 4th, an LS 5th is going to drop your revs, I’m guessing out of your power band.
All I know is first chance I get I’m either getting an LS or the GSR tranny.

This link will show you the difference’s between the trannies:

At 4,000rpms I’m doing 72mph, so thats about right with you. At 4,500 rpms I’m doing about 82mph, and at 5,000 rpms I’m doing 90mph…all of this in 5th gear. I’m not really sure where I shift out of 4th at since at that speed I’m not really watching the speedo, just the tach. I also top out at 123-125 mph in 5th.

I’m running a GSR-YS1.
