Basically I have a stock '92 RS and it does have a lot of kms. (Canada) on it. I’m going to rebuild the motor just to make sure it’s in good shape before I spend the money on a turbo but I don’t want to spend too much so I was thinking I’d just keep the motor stock. I also considered an LSVTEC setup but I personally don’t know a ton about building the motor myself and I don’t want to deal with not having it build right and breaking after a few months. So I’m almost positive I’m gonna find a garage that can do it for me. What do you guys think a reasonable power goal would be with something like a T3 turbo in the neighbourhood of 10-12psi? I was thinking I’d like to hit 300whp if posible but is that realistic with a stock motor on turbo? Also if you guys have any other input as to a better way to go I’m all ears. Keep in mind it’s a daily driver that I’m just looking to make a lot more fun to drive (with maybe the occasional run down the 1350…) and I don’t want it breaking down after a while. Reliability is my top priority.
What can you expect?..you can expect to go 1.) Broke AND 2) seeing a shitload of problems.LOL Just kidding. 300whp on a stock bottom end can be done…especially if all the stock internals are fresh. Xenocron did it on 16psi, but he is also a hell of a tuner. BTW you could expect 200-260hp with a t3 on an ls. I’d be getting a t3/t4 of some sort to make closer to the 300whp range.
300 whp + stock motor+ daily driver = disaster
if 300 is your goal consider getting another vehicle to drive everyday.
you also might want to pick up a helms manual, expand your tool collection save some money and build the motor yourself this way when you blow it up at least you can fix it yourself.
Well if 300 is a bit much for a daily driver I probably won’t go that high. I don’t want to be broken down on the side of the road all the time. I think it’s more of a fantasy but I’d like to at least reach 250 though. I think any less then 250 and I’m not sure it’s worth doing. Is it posible to elimate all the searching around for the right parts and buy a nice kit such as a Greddy or Turbonetics and still hit these kind of numbers? I’ve heard of people having a number of problems with a Greddy kit as well but I’m not even too sure what parts I would be looking into for a decent setup. This is my first project car so I really don’t have any experience farting around with things malfunctioning. I may even consider waiting a while longer before I get into turbo if it’s going to be more of a hassle then I’m really ready for.
it all boils down to one thing…how much money do you have to spend.
Turbonetics’ rating is 225hp @ 8psi for their ls motors, i’d think that you could get it as high as 250 with proper tuning and a little bit more boost. Only thing though…i think their kit comes with an fmu…and i would go the chipped ecu route, this would probably be the only way to hit those numbers reliably. The greddy kit seems like it would be too expensive for what you get, but the turbonetics kit is a reliable source to buy from. I’m not sure how much my car is putting to the wheels, im estimating around 220-240. You would not believe how fast your car will feel even with a little less than 250hp.
a2steg, the turbonetics kit sounds like a good way to go I may just start with that and then look into chipping the ecu. I’ll look around and see what kind of prices I come up with. I’m sure your probably right about the car feeling very quick. All I’ve got right now is a 3" cold air intake with K&N cone filter and a custom 2 1/4 exhaust with a Magnaflow Cat and Vibrant Performance muffler so I imagine just a basic turbo setup is going to be more then satisfying but I know after a while I’m just going to be itching to do more once I’ve got some more money to blow. I appreciate the advice guys.
so you have a stock 92 RS with high kilometers and your looking for 250-300hp? and you think anything less then 250 is not worth it? I would think anything 200-230whp for a daily driver couldn’t be that bad . . . thats a 60-90 hp increase.
Forget the 300hp goal unless you are willing to comprimise on the amount of money you will spend, because you will spend a LOT on a dyno doing tuning, unless you street tune it yourself.
I would say shoot for the 230hp goal; this is a really a nice increase over what you have now. Remember, you have about 130’ish horsepower right now, so a nearly 100hp more than you got now will make it very fun.
As to your engine: as long as it has been well taken care of you should be fine. If nothing else, perhaps consider having the valve seals replaced in your head - it can be done with the head on the block - and do the timing belt and tensioner / tensioner spring while you are in there. Little stuff like that will help your engine longevity.
I would not street tune a 300hp stock motor running ~15lbs of boost
I would not street tune a 300hp stock motor running ~15lbs of boost
Well if you got nothing else, it can be done. I wouldn’t do it BY myself, no. You need to have someone in the passanger seat who knows how to tune, and tune well, to do it.
I have a stock LS motor that I drive daily with 7 lbs. @ 210 WHP. I have the old school DRAG Turbo Kit. T3/T4 50 trim Turbonetics Turbo, Turbonetics External Wastegate, Cometic Multylayered Thicker Head Gasket, 450cc Injectors, 255 Walboro InTank Fuel Pump, tuned and dynoed with CHROME. She is running great. I am now only haveing issues with my warn out stck clutch at 147,000 miles. My goal now is to change my clutch and retune with like 10-12 lbs. for fun nights. Estimated 275 WHP saftley at what ever lbs it takes her to that level of WHP.
I bought the kit from a G2IC member for $1,400 shipped to me.
Then to install it and tune it cost me like $2,000.
I had no idea that BOOSTING a Teg would be sooo difficult. But when all is complete, boosting feels great.
Good luck with your set up.
Jesus it cost you $2,000 to install and tune your car?
The install with parts…Thicker Head Gasket…APR Head Bolts, 255 Walboro Fuel Pump, complete upper and lower Motor Gaskets from Acura…$1,300…
The Dyno Tunning was $500…With help installing the injectors and chipping the ECU. Then I had to have the down pipe welded to the cat back among other things…

DENCIO…That is a rebuilt bone stock LS motor? What do you have in it?
if your ever thinking of going ls/vtec, you have to rebuild the motor anyways. Having 225hp to 300hp is alot of power. (with turbo)
Go with a Big T3 @ 10-11psi and it will be reliable. You also wont be disapointed.
- You can expect over 210-220WHP and 200-210tq. I got those dyno numbers at .5 bar (7-8psi).
- You can expect a mid 13 - high 12 sec 1/4 mile on drag radials. I got a 13.6 at 5500’ elevation.
- You can expect it to cost around 3k (after making your engine solid). Mine ran around 4k with timing belt, axles, clutch, etc.
- You can expect to go through tires… ALOT
- You can expect regular grins from ear to ear…
