What do you think of this turbo set up?? comments please

I plan on starting about 5psi till i get the bugs worked out then up it lil by lil.

I just read a good article in HCI about b16s. The first part of the article was in the Sept. 05 issue. The motor they used was a high mileage b16a from a engine importer. Stocker motor was run with RS Akimoto air intake, A’PEXI type r header and 3inch exhaust, FAST management system and 36pd injectors on 92 octane pump gas and produced 185hp on an engine dyno. Next they threw a ZEX nitrous kit with a 75 shot with no problems. Next the b16a had a turbonetics turbo kit installed. They replaced the air to air intercooler with a spearco air to water ic. (Turbo used on this kit was a
T3/T04B-V hybrid turbo.) Once again with pump gas, FAST engine management system, 36pd injectors, turbo xs boost controller at 9.1psi the engine produced 271 hp. Next they upped the boost from 9.1 to 14.3, added a splash of race gas (didn’t say what octain or how much a splash is) and the motor produced 326 hp. The 2nd part of the b16 topic in the NOV 05 issue. Next they reported the boost was upped to 17psi and eventually cracked 3 stock pistons.

Just thought i would share this with some of you guys.

If 17psi popped 3 stockl pistons, I would say that extended running at 14psi would do the same. I like the 9psi and pump gas setup, especially for street. Keep in mind though the air to water IC is much more efficient, on short term dyno runs, probably getting ice water. For street use, water ICs arent really useful.

Wish you luck with your setup. :cross:

Thanks man, I was also thinking the same thing as you running at 14psi. I will have to relook but they said it was regular water then they switched to ice water when they upped to boost but i forget what psi. I was also pretty impressed with the 9psi on 91 octane.

Edit: Before the b16 blew on 17psi it was making over 420hp.

the b16 is by far the better choice than the b18a1. the most important factor being how well the head flows compared to an LS head. stock to stock, the LS head would prolly choke out at about 350whp. guys on honda tech have taken totally stock b16’s to 600whp. so in my opinion, i would choose the b16 over the LS. good luck with the build and let us know how it goes.

alright man thanks

redex04 hey there is a guy out here that made 330whp on a completly stock b16 with a sc61 on 12psi. he goes by gunit on the forums here and honda tech. so 12psi is possible. but i would sell that 16g and get a better turbo. and just get a better manifold and wg now, all you would have to do is save a little longer but less money in the end for the right stuff.

alright thanks for the information
