What do you think of this turbo set up?? comments please

I recently bought a teg with a b16 swap and i plan on boosting it and for the past month or so ive been collecting turbo parts for a budget turbo kit let me know what you guys think.

BMC race turbo adapter (dsm flange to t3)
SSAC tubular manifold (i know you guys are going to say they suck but my friend braced his and heat wrapped it and its worked fine for over 1 year)
XS power 38mm external wastegate
FMIC (2inch outlets)
EVO III 16G turbo (500 miles)(not an acutal DSM turbo its a knockoff)
DSM 450cc injectors
-4AN oil feed line
downpipe flange, exhaust flange
bunch of 2inch couplers

I also am planning on buying a 1g BOV off my buddy and ordering a flange off ebay. My friend and I are going to be making the downpipe and intercooler pipes so all i need for those are some mandrel u bends. Also i plan on going with a chipped ecu but not sure what programn to go (hondata, uberdata, crome, etc). I was thinking of chipping my ecu and running a basemap till i can get my car to an experience tuner to do a street and possibly a dyno tune. I believe i have most the major parts i need for this project besides a bunch of various gaskets, dump tube for WG (prob make one while we are making the dp and ic pipes),oil return line, colder plugs, guages (anyone suggest what gauges are a definate?), vaccum lines, t bolt clamps. Also what do most you guys run for a pcv fix? (just a catch can?) Are there any major things im missing that i will need to turbo my car?

Also i might be picking up another teg with a b18 in it would you guys suggest using the b18 or b16 for boost or going lsvtec?

which ones in better shape internally, i’d boost it. b18’s love boost hence the low compression, but once you have high compression and boost you’re hooked forever. Hell if i can help you here lol, i say no to ls/vtec but it is all in how you build it. and i’ve not seen but heard a lot about ls/vtecs doing very nicely w/boost but like i say thats hear-say crap…oh yea sounds to me like your setup is decent, i’m not agreeing w/the SSAC but aparently you’ve found a way to make it work so go w/it.

Yea i will prob upgrade the SSAC manifold in the future. I have access to a welder so if it cracks I will just reweld it. I also plan on trying to brace the turbo to the block so it puts less stress on the manifold.

Don’t do hondata- with the new programs and chips nowadays its a waste of money. Don’t know what year teg yours is, but if its OBD0, go turboedit, if its OBD1- either uberdata or crome…Crome seems to getting a lot more support these days, so i’d say do that. If you havent found pipes yet- I suggest Racing Solutions kit- http://store.racing-solutions.org/inbukit1.html cuz its cheap and the hotness at the same time they have a 2inch kit on there too- I have a turbo LS and I love it, and the low comp really loves the boost. But w/ a b16, you’ll make more power on less boost…to a point where the b16 blows the hell up. Gauges- Oil Pressure and Boost are going to be the most critical and a WBO2 if you can afford it/plan to tune on ur own- Good luck!

Thanks, that intercooler pipe kit is really cheap so I will prob order it. My car is a 1990 ls with a b16 swap and has a pr3 ecu so is that obd0? I plan on going with a WBO2 in the future when i get the stuff to do my own tuning.

Hey man I would say get a better wastegate. I had the xs pwr and it boke apart on me within 3 months of use. I have since gotten a Turbonetics evolution wastegate. I love it so much more. No more boost spike and no worry about it breaking. If you want a BOV I have one for sale or trade. It is a Greddy RS with an adapter flange with it. I used it on my Mazdaspeed Protege for a couple of weeks and now my wife drives it and doesn’t like the extra noise. Hope this hlps.

SSAC tubular manifold (i know you guys are going to say they suck but my friend braced his and heat wrapped it and its worked fine for over 1 year)

XS power 38mm external wastegate

EVO III 16G turbo (500 miles)(not an acutal DSM turbo its a knockoff)

get a tial wg, if u want to fuck around with the manifold go for it but its a bitch to take everything off ur car to reweld the manifold… and as for that turbo if it is balanced and no shaft play go for it but turbos are relativly cheap so why not get a established brand name not a knockoff

highspeed - i emailed you about the bov

gen2tegls - i plan on getting a tial wg in the future if i keep the car and wanna make more power but for right now this is just a project with a low budget turbo kit, i am gonna attempt to use the manifold and see what happens my friend made it work so i dont see why i cant and if not then ill just find a better manifold in the future and the turbo i got for dirt cheap and it has no shaft play and is balanced

it doesnt take much to blow a 14 year old engine if there is something that malfunctions. A wastegate failure will cost u at least 200 (for a new wg), and even more for shit that happens to the motor.

I did what u did and went with a low budget kit. I sold it. If you are going to do it at all, do it right. 60 trim turbo, tial wg, REAL manifold, no ssac IC (get 2.5 inch ic piping), and run 2.5 inch charge piping.

gas is 3.50 a gallon. That thing is going to spool way to fast, especially with 2 in ic piping.

fast spool = more air into the motor = more gas into the motor at cruising speed.

true… ill have to rethink this… what do you think about runing 2.5 ic piping then just a silicone reducer coupler into the intercooler. The intercooler is pretty big it just sucks the outlets are 2inch i was thinking of have 2.5 welded on.

anyone else have any input on this set up?

(I just got my turbo adapter today so i will prob start fabbing up the intercooler pipes and down pipe.)

you ask for imput then u just say im just going to use what i have…so whats the point in giving imput when ur mind is made up … get a tial wg get a little bigger turbo get a inline pro manifold and do 2.5 inch ic piping and downpipe

I never said i was going to use what i have! I still have time to change my set up and i wanted some peoples opinions on what they would do.

if your gonna get a kit, talk to doublelcustoms he builds them to fit your da

why did u choose the evo3 turbo? if you aren’t pushing more than 12 psi its almost a waste.

I picked this turbo because it has just 500 miles and i bought it for only $65. I think my b16 should be able to handle 12psi don’t you think?

65 i hate u i spent 300 on mine :frowning:

I am not a honda turbo gugu, fairly new to them, but I was once a member of the dark side (DSM), so I know a lil bit about boosting. I may be wrong, and if I am someone please correct me, but I don’t think the compression of a B16 and 12psi will go well together. Especially for a street car, on pump gas. I would say 7-8psi is a little more realistic. Once again, if I am wrong, please correct me, and explain, as I am always open to learning.
