Which exhaust? Need opinions on power gain, sound, look. HKS vs tanabe vs Greddy
oh and its for a 90 teg rs
Power wise I have no clue but from my personal experience, hours on YouTube, and dozens of car meets I’ve been to thus far it’s all up to you. Only you will be able to decide what you like as far as looks, sound, etc. Power on the other hand everyone just says make sure it’s 60mm to 2.5in on NA cars and 3in on turbo applications and MANDREL BENT. Mandrel bent is the biggy because when something is crush bent it actually makes the pipe a little smaller in the bends and doesn’t keep it true all the way threw. I don’t know if this will help any but just my .02 on the matter. In the end I ended up going with a $130 Egay exhaust and with a DC 4-2-1 2 piece header and stock cat it sounds damn good to me and I haven’t had one person have a bad thing to say about the sound and it’s only gotten me pulled over once but then again I wasn’t exactly going easy on it when I drove by the guy.
ok cool thanks for the info. But do you think the 5mm between the hks and tanabe would make that big of a difference aswell as do you think flow wise there would be a big difference between how the hks exhaust is a very straight through piping with the muffler being on the very end of the exhaust and how the tanabe is shaped like the stock exhaust with more bends and the muffler being where the stock one is?
You won’t notice a difference between an exhaust that has 4 bends vs an exhaust that has 3.
The same goes for a 5mm difference of an exhaust… but obviously, the bigger pipe will flow better due to the higher volume.
alright cool thanks just making sure. Oh and would the hks restrict power if i were to go bigger cams and hi comp pistons?
I have an ebay exhaust and i like it. But if i had to choose, I love the look of the hks exhaust.
Tanabe. i have one on my 93 rs and it sounds great(deep tone and clear, not raspy and sounding like a ticked off bumble bee lol) on the 4cycl mostly stock car haha
if your looking to make as much power on a stock non vtec engine then all you really need is a high flow muffler for the rear section/axle back only. The bigger the pipe you get the louder and maybe deeper but still louder in general, Its not going to sound deep at high rpms only raspy. there isnt really any pint in getting bigger pipes on a stock engine so keep it at 2.25".
now if you have a high flow build with intake manifold, throttle body, cia and headers then you can benifit from a 2.5" cat-back system then add a 30" straight flow resonatore in the mid section to help keep the high rpm tone down. if on a budget then have a custom catback made wich can varry from $100-$200. or dish out the cash for a brand name stainless system.

hey i really appreciate the info and your opinion! definately will look into a custom cat back! thanks
Greddy. I bought a SP1 for $550 (now discontinued) back in 1998 and had it on my 92 LS for 9 years before I wrecked it, 2.25"Exhaust tone was deep and pretty consistant over the years, the piping never rusted, the fitment was perfect. I’d buy another if they still made that version, I’m assuming the SP2 cant be that far off. Now I have a cheap ebay 2.5" catback on my 91 RS that should hold me over till I get ‘build fever’ again
How do you feel about the HKS hi-power system? I know its a 2.17 piping with a three bend piping and a 4 in muffler outlet. But do you think it would rob me that much hp if i were to have IM CAI TB and maybe cams? Vs a four bend exhaust such as the tanabe with a 2.25 piping?
In my opinion, the Greddys sound the best, the HKS next, and the tanabe last. Just my personal preference. Power wise, gains would be relative to other modifications but far as the exhausts themselves, they will give you close to the same power. Even a bone stock car will gain from a larger system, the key is not to go too large. That has been proven over and over through the years. Dynos are all over the web showing the power gains from all types of exhaust setups. If you’re getting one of the shelf like the ones you’ve listed, just pick one you think sounds the best and go for it. I LOVE the sound of the Greddy TIC. Loud, but the tone just gets my heart going. If you’re gonna do a custom setup, check out KTeller for kits. A local speed shop can build you one too.
The exhausts I make for my customers usually consist of a kit similar to KTellers, but piping only which I buy wholesale. I add a properly sized magnaflow high flow cat, a moroso spiral flow resonator, and let the customer pick the muffler and tip combo of their choice. I tend to choose more mild and quiet combinations cause i’m old lol.

I really appreciate the input but do you think that the .07 of an inch in piping aswell as the extra bend make a signifigant difference?
No.
in the grand scheme of things … nope. for a full race car where every last bit counts, perhaps, but you’d be one hell of an anal builder. Let’s put it this way, you won’t notice, nor will it matter on the track.
I have the Greddy SP2. Awesome exhaust. Though, it’s discontinued.
Everyone loves the sound of mine.
B18C with
4-1 header with 2.5" collector
2.5" Vibrant Performance High-Flow Cat
Greddy SP2 exhaust system.
Sounds mean. Especially, in VTEC
greddy sp2 or mx for sure. i have greddy mx and love it. the only difference of sp2 is the tip.
ordered the ebay exhaust…mainly as an exhaust replacement…cant sound worse than a muffler cutoff lol
Does anyone have the Tanabe Touring exhaust? I would like to hear a sound clip of one on a DA. The only one I can find is from the inside of the car.
