Yesterday I was in 4th, I go to downshift to 2nd while braking to turn a corner and it grinds bad. Not the usual, oh sh!it I forgot to step on the clutch, less spinning. Anyway, I drive about 2 blocks come to a stop and CLUNK! I was like what the?!:uhoh: So I drive and I pick up a little speed and clunk clunk clunk I figure, ok busted axle. I go another block and find out I left a long ass trail of oil from where I stopped and heard the first clunk. I check under the car and I can’t find where it’s leaking from, but it was leaking from the area between where you can see your flywheel and the upper part of my oil pan. I drive it down to a shop and when I decelerate and leave it in fourth every so often it would make a loud clunk, felt like my transmission was about to fall out. When I looked in the engine bay I could see the axle was in fact busted, but does anyone know of where the oil could be coming from and what the clunking was? Clutch, flywheel, transmission, something simpler like a seal or gasket? It wasn’t a massive amount of oil, just a continuous dripping. I drove a few miles to the shop so the engine seemed fine. TIA
The passenger side axle, right?? If so, it is probably leaking from the rubber gasket that sits around the axle. You probably damaged it when the axle broke. Either way, I am guessing that it is coming from the tranny, even if it isnt coming from the axle.
Is the seam where the tranny casings come together still sealed up good?? No visible cracks??
Originally posted by Matt1600 Only thing visible is the axle and the dripping motor oil.
What axle is it??
Is the oil leaking from the area of the broken axle??
It’s the passenger side axle. The inner part of the axle is busted (closer to the tranny) I can’t really tell if it’s actually coming from that or if it’s from around the area where the tranny and block meet. I haven’t been able to get a good view of where the origin of the leak is coming from.
BR is right it is probably the axle seal on the passanger side of the tranny. If the axle snapped it has no pressure to push against the seal and will leak tranny oil. They are easy to replace. It took me a whole minute to replace mine, after the axle was out.
Originally posted by Matt1600 Mine don’t have transmission fluid. Y1 tranny (B16 tranny?) is what I have. I have a B16.
The Y1 is a manual tranny. The Honda Manual trannys use gear oil not tranny fluid. Tranny fluid for automatics is a hydrolic type fluid (much thinner than oil). I just replaced the seals on my Y1 before I installed the B16A. The replacement seal you need is the passanger side one for the 90-91 USDM integra tranny. I have the p/n’s for the 2 tranny and 1 half shaft seal. If you need them send me an email at secondjenn@aol.com
Originally posted by Matt1600 I’ll let you know for sure if I need them. I should know today or tomorrow. You got hook ups for the part or something?
No special hook ups. The seals are inexpensive parts. Its just easier to go to the dealer with the p/n that you need because most guys that work the parts counter don’t know what they are doing. :loser: that couldn’t cut it as a mechanic.
Originally posted by Matt1600 So then it’s busted seals that are causing my car to leak oil? And that loud clunking was probably my axle?
Yep, thats what I am guessing.
When you pick up that seal, make sure that you are really careful while installing it. You dont want to damage it in any way because that could cause it to leak.
You will need a press to install it unless you have a big socket that you can use. Just make sure that it goes in right and doesnt get tweaked.
It isnt too bad at all. Just make sure to get in there to pinpoint your problem though.
You will have to remove the intermediate shaft (halfshaft) to get to it. It is held onto the block by 3 bolts. You will obviously have to remove the driver side axle to get the intermediate shaft off…
Originally posted by AZN dont forget, honda/acura trannys take motor oil. 10w30 or 10w40 depending on the weather. NOT GL4 or GL5(gear oil)
The best stuff to use is the honda MTF. I wont put anything but that in my tranny…
true. i’m not gonna argue with you. thats what i use too(honda MTF). alot of the fast lube place like Jiffy Lube uses 10w30(motor oil) in honda and acura manual trans. and we do the same at our shop too.
AZN - Yep, that pretty much sums it up. I still use 10w30 in anything old, like the 80’s hondas, but I wont put it in my car… I like it when my gears engage smoothly.
