Carbon Fiber Hiro Rep Spoilers made by JDP - Group Buy

im pretty sure 3 or 4 people have gotten theirs. i know at least Colin and Jdecks have.

[QUOTE=Colin;2320025]Fitment should be the same for these assuming the thickness of the material on the wing is the same or similar. Once I get the prototypes in my hands maybe you could come over and we can test them on any wings you may have in your possession. That is one of my concerns - ensuring that they fit well without a lot of slop but also that they will work on all the wings even if there are slight differences in material thickness from wing to wing.

Regarding how the set screws mar the under side of the hatch… I was looking up hardware and found that there are set screws specifically made to be “conformable”. Basically it’s a normal set screw with a nylon tip on it. I’m not sure if this is something that would be durable/secure enough, fit properly within the tight space we’re working with or even reduce the damage by any significant amount, but I figure it’s at least worth considering. They are a LOT more expensive than standard set screws (nylon tipped would add almost $10 to the cost of a set of brackets compared to standard flat tipped set screws), but luckily this would be easy enough to make optional if only some people wanted them. Here’s what they look like:

Colin I don’t even care about finish but sign me up for wanting hardware also. Looks I’m less worried about that and care more for toughness/functionality lol. And I’m soorry if this sounds wierd I’m half asleep lol.

Thanks for the input, I should have some sort of update regarding the hardware within a day or two.

yea im undecided on how im going to mount mine… i like the idea of the nylon tipped bolts, but i also like the idea of actually bolting it through my hatch like jdecks did

OK, well I’d hoped to have gathered a little more info by now but unfortunately was not able to. But I still wanted to get everyone an update. Before I get to the good stuff I have a favor to ask of anyone who has received their wing and that is to measure the width of the wing from end to end as measured at the base plates of the wing. Please measure the most rearward part of the base and the most forward part of the base - the two measurements should be different as the bases are not parallel.

I apologize in advance for only having iPhone pics and not DSLR quality as in my previous update.

I was able to get specs on the original Hiro/Pancake clamp mounting hardware and had a set of prototypes made to these specs. Here are some pics. Please note that they are not finished pieces. The original hardware does not have the sharp corners and instead has rounded corners. It would be my intention to keep the new hardware rounded like the originals so long as that doesn’t affect how they function.

Mock up

The brackets so far are looking pretty good and seem plenty solid to me however there are some minor tweaks to the specs which I wanted to make. However, here is where it gets a bit more complicated. When I first received my wing it seemed like the fitment was only so-so and now it’s apparent that this is definitely the case. I measured the width of my hatch and it is 51.5" at the back and 52.25" at the front. The base of the wing I received was 0.5" narrower in the rear and 0.375" narrower in the front. Due to the wing being narrower than the hatch the original “clamp” design brackets don’t seem ideal. I was able to mount it with the prototype hardware and it felt pretty snug but it didn’t inspire confidence. I can go into more detail if needed, but to make a long story short the wing being narrower than the hatch changes the direction of force exerted by the clamps. This is why I’ve requested that everyone who has received their spoiler please measure it for me.

I believe that I can fairly easily design new hardware that will work however:

  • I’m not sure if my wing is an oddity and everyone else’s is the right width
  • I’m not sure if this was a mistake on JDP’s part or if the wing he copied was also too short
  • A redesign may slightly increase production costs as it’d likely mean two different styles of bracket one for the leading edge and one for the rear of the base of the spoiler. I’m guessing this difference should be slim to none but I haven’t run it by the machine shop to confirm this.
  • The man I’ve been working with at the machine shop is going on vacation starting 10/9 and will be gone for 2-3 weeks. I’d hoped to put in our order before that so we didn’t have to wait till he returns (turn around time after I give them the order and final specs is estimated at 2-3 weeks).

I had planned to test the hardware on an actual Hiro and Pancake this weekend however this didn’t work out and I am trying to see about doing this test fitting ASAP this upcoming week. But with work I’m not sure if that will work out or not. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions, concerns, comments…etc

Awesome clamps Colin.

But that gap between the wing and quarter panel is horrible. And wouldn’t a hollow wing with such a big gap between the ends of the wing and quarter panel be more of an aerodynamic hinderance?

In that final photo it doesn’t look like the hatch is fully shut.

Would be interesting to see the same angle of an OG wing to see how big the gap is.

But let’s be realistic… These reproduction wings are more for looks than aerodynamic improvements.

Thanks Dave, although looks like they will be changing a bit for the final design. I don’t think the gap is much of a concern from an aerodynamic standpoint. I’m sure it’s not good but I doubt any negative effect is significant. The gap leaves something to be desired and is about 4mm larger all the way around than the real Hiro which had about 6-7mm of gap with no padding material between the fiberglass and hatch.

I hope there’s some aero benefit, that’s the only reason I bought the damn thing! Comparing the aero for the JDP v2 vs the real Hiro I think the angle is bit more extreme on the JDP version but the Hiro is more slim and the edges are sharper on the wing element. I can’t say which would be preferred from a downforce perspective as I’m not an aerodynamic engineer.

Wingbox was kind enough to come over last night and help me bounce around some ideas and check fitment. We confirmed that the JDP v2 Hiro replica is slightly narrower than the Pancake and Hiro. The Hiro feels quite fragile but fitment is amazing compared to the JDP v2. That’s what you get when you do a copy of a copy. Wingbox has tried many different brackets and mix & matches them to the specific wing. These are custom parts so each one will be slightly different and thus fit slightly differently. He apparently has had the same problem with the brackets rotating when tightened but not quite as bad as I was experiencing because these new wings are a tiny big narrower than the Hiro & Pancake. I have some more ideas for changing the design of the brackets but need to mock up some templates.

Who all has received their wing? I’m wondering how much more time we have until everyone gets antsy and wants their brackets ASAP.

The jdp v2 was very nice to see in person. I forgot to check if it has the boxy look sides rather then the angled slanting sides the pancakes have like I mentioned to you Colin. Anyone who is waiting for their wing, I can say it looks great. And I’m sure everyone will be pleased.
Brackets should come out great regardless whatever method you choose to go with, just sign me up for 2 sets because I’m afraid I lost all my brackets lol
Everyone be aware to apply some kind of gasket or anything between the wing and trunk were they meet or else it might scratch your paint. Just a lil FYI

I’m excited to see the outcome regardless… Funny how amped I am to see the finished product when I’m not getting any of the wings lol.

Proper work Wingbox and Colin, as always.

Any updates on others getting wings or any time frame… Seems like a lot of time has passed with out anyone else receiveing there wings or email to pay?.

Us racing lip ftw

I agree with you troy, been like 2 week without someone else recieving a wing ?

just found out that when my wing gets here it will be on a thursday. its already been over a month since it was shipped so im hoping to have it before november…

I talked with John recently about some stuff but didn’t get an idea from him as to whether they’d all been produced and were just waiting to ship or whether he’s still working on producing them.

Where’s everyone else who has ordered one?

Pretty much same as the first gen clamps… except underneath where you have tape and screws, I got aluminum support plates… for more holding power…

trust me, the second i even HEAR about my wing being shipped ill let y’all know. i was hoping to have the wing before i send my car off to paint because i might decide to mount it like Jdecks did (with holes in the trunk), so HOPEFULLY its soon…

Me to  i should be next

My wing has arrived safely. The box was pancaked but the wing was undamaged. Sad part is, we got this typhoon and my car is tucked away so i cant do anything with it. I’ll post some pictures later.

Glad to hear it arrived safely. Stay safe!

thanks man… the typhoon blew over like whatever. they always over hype them to force people to over prepare. the only damage i have to deal with is to my car cover. it tore in the front part so now i have to find someone to sew together…

anyway, im gonna try and get this thing installed tomorrow.
