that’s a sick hood… I still need to get one for my car
Exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much for this, that finished hood is inspiring it came out so well! The fading isn’t so bad on mine, its the yellowing I hope to remove. It is sort of an olive color now. It doesn’t look too bad, but I would like to see if some of it could be sanded out. And yes, I know you are not responsible for any damage that may occur by the time I get to it
I’ll look for the Diamond clearcut polish. Could I use them on my headlights as well? The clear has long been sanded but they could use a refinishing.
I really appreciate the offer for work on the hood! Hopefully I can tackle it. One of these days though I want to meet up for sure.
I cleared my email and read those directions for the headlights. If you don’t have them posted yet, they should be in teg tips. Nice and clear, and almost inspires me to dive in and take my lights apart. Almost. Too chicken shit though haha
The yellow should come out with sanding… and i’d do the last 1500gritt stage with some wet/dry sandpaper, and yes, dip the paper in a bucket of water to keep it wet. This will help prevent deep scratches that don’t buff out.
You can use the same 1500gritt wet/dry paper and Diamond Cut on headlights, it works pretty damn good.
Honestly, opening the lights up was SO much easier than I had imagined it to be. Just take your time and keep the housing warm, it will separate with some gentle persuasion. Like I said in that walkthrough, just clean all of the old adhesive out as best as possible… that ensures a good seal with the new butyl tape/adhesive.
I actually lost that walkthrough I sent lol… if its Teg-Tip worthy, then hell, throw it up.
Like I said, any specific questions, hit me up… I’m always glad to rant and ramble on. Lol
Thanks man! I sure do appreciate it. I used a sports waterbottle when I did the headlights, I’ll make sure to keep it wet. When I get all my issues sorted I’ll definently try to give pulling the headlights apart a go. And yes, i think it is teg tip worthy
Finally started the car, got her warmed up. She runs smooth, gauges all work and she sounds nice. Tried to rev it but the 2-step kicked in at 3200, that was sorta cool lol. Anyways the whole time we were leak checking, solved one at the fpr and another coolant leak on a looshish hose. Notcied oil at the front of the block and shut her down.
So got it back on stands on the front and the wheel off. Found a nice sized puddle, I assume from the oil sammich plate.
The leak up front is here, you can see the runoff on the plastic. What would cause this? A head gasket? I did check the coolant, looks like nice coolant and not milkshake. Only ran for 8 or so minutes though. I may pull the timing belt and all the plastics to see. Darn
look to me like possible valve cover leaking for the front leak but could also be camshaft seals leaking. I would just tighten up the valve cover a bit more and feel for oil coming from that end. I doubt the HG is leaky. especially leaking in that amount. As for the sandwich plate I would just tighten it up and use some teflon on all the connections thats a nice size puddle sure you did not leave one of the ports open?
Valve cover is good. I used all new gaskets, put hondabond in the corners and torqued to spec. I am thinking the driver side drip is from the cam seals and possibly front main seal. I am ordering all those as we speak.
I am going to plug the AC holes, in the pics it does sorta look like bolts poked through at one point. I checked the donut, doesn’t look to be leaking, looks like one of the hoses attached to it. Maybe the VTEC oil feed line. Maybe I did leave a hole unplugged. I can’t fully see though because the axle and halfshaft are in the way. I did fire it up with the car on stands, and it just pours out of that area (between the axle and block, coming somewhere from the oil plate).
Otherwise I’ll be ordering all 3 cam seals, and the front main seal. Shouldn’t be too bad to do this, big thing is the crank pulley and cleaning off all the loctite. Sigh. I have to leave for a 2 week job in Aspen, parts should be here by then and I’ll get cracking. If a more experienced hand wants to help I would feed you and buy you beerz and stuff.
SO basically take all the timing crap out, replace seals, put back together and try again. I also need to remove the driverside axle and halfshaft and completely remove the donut and see what is going on there. So close!
Hey, it cranked over and fired up… take that as a positive step forward…
Not sure if I laid it all out in my thread, but I had multiple leaks lol:
-Coolant fitting on cylinder head
-Coolant leak from top radiator hose, old hose-clamp ftl
-Vtec solenoid top-hat
-Sandwich plate… one of the allen-key fittings was ‘hand tight’
-Front-main seal (still currently leaking)
It felt like a goddamn mess! I still need to tackle the front seal, and thankfully I have a new OEM one from my bottom-end seal kit. I’m just reaaaaaally not looking forward to pulling the oil pump off. shudder
Remember though, it would be wise to get a new oil pan gasket… I seem to have terrible luck re-using them.
Just take it all in stride man. Check to make sure the main bolt of the sammich plate is tight, then check that all the plugs/fittings are snug. Also any oil-pressure sensor etc etc.
Im down to help! my retail season is over so lets set something up ill be taking 2 days off in a row from now on and have a ton of vacation racked up.
I have the crank pulley tool that bitch will come right off…

Thanks man! I knew I would have teething issues after taking my car apart, but from firing and hoping for a quick drive to fully back up on 4 stands is sorta depressing. EVen while I was jacking it up I was lamenting I was going the wrong way. Haha but its all in fun, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself if I didn;t have this green car that needed something done to it. Thanks again for the inspiration as always.
SOunds great Rabi! Congrats at finally getting some time to yourself, I know work was getting rough for you for a minute there. I’m a pretty mean grill cook when you want to come down!
Thatr crank tool could come in handy! I slathered the bolt in red loctite. I am sad I didn;t install a seal while I was there. Ah well so is life. WHen I was a carpenter a coworker always used to say we do it nice cause we do it twice!
I wonder if that coolant leak is coming from the water pump since the leak is on the drivers side floor if not then maybe a hose or radiator (unless it’s fairly new) leak that’s running to the drivers side of the car, but it’s kinda difficult to diagnose without actually being there in person. My advise is start up the car and let it warm up, when it reaches normal operating temperature shut it off. Then give it a few minutes and if you feel safe to and have secured your car on jacks stands, then safely get under the car to see if you can tell where it’s dripping from and if it isn’t dripping or leaking yet give it a few minutes to settle, it will leak if does have one then you can pin point where your problem is hope this helps. If you need more help feel free to ask me any questions and I’ll be glad to answer them for you as best as I can. Good luck to ya & nice db2, she sure is a sexy beast.
Thanks for the help and compliments! She makes a nice garage ornament huh? lol
The leak on the driver side is oil, it is not alot. The big puddle was from the donut or oil sending unit. I cannot see because the axle and halfshaft is in the way. I am about to tear down the timing side of the motor and remove the axle to get to the bottom of this. I want to drive it so bad lol.
For reference here are some pics of the motor when we got it buttonesd up and dropped her in. It could be anything on the sammich, or it could be the sending unit. We will see. At least the teg gets a fresh oil change after 10 minutes of running. Sigh.
Give me a call when your coming back to town, Ill take that monday and come out and well get that oil leak sorted out… So close buddy, just be paitient
Werd Glynn thanks for looking out! I just got home from Aspen. I am dead tired but what a blast. I’ll call you in a little bit.
Sound like hell and a blast man, Glad you had a good time:up:
Thanks man! It was too much fun, at times ridiculous that I was getting paid for it.
I’m coming up to Denver this weekend and staying at your place. Ha!
Any pics of you kissing shawn whites ass??? Looking forward to it senoir…
Nah, we did chat with him and smell some of what they were smokin at the athletes tent. Got smoked out by one of the guys sponsered by Go-Pro, had a cam lined up but couldn’t meet up again. So is life.
Well I tore the timing side apart, cam seals are definently bad. Figured I would throw on the Junk2 cam gears since they are lying around. Cams are indeed late model type R, I just took dudes word for it and never tore the motor down.
Took out the axle and I still have no clue where big leak on the back of the block is. It’s something to do with the oil sammich plate though. Can I run the car with no halfshaft or driverside axle in it? I would be able to pinpoint the leak if I ran it for a minute with those out.
And drilled out the FD2 type R shift collar so it would fit my junk2 shifter. I don’t know if I like the way it looks, but I do like the way it feels a lot more.
I didn’t bring a camera, I’ll post pics later.
How long did that motor sit before you bought it? I would think Cam seals going bad wouldnt produce a leak of that size. If you dont get it sorted out this week ican come down and help/hang out next monday if you dont have plans already…
With the motor running (even in neutral) the enertia is enough to make the transsmission/differential want to turn… with no half-shaft (and/or MTF) that’s is a bad thing…
I would pull the oil-filter off, make sure the main sandwich-plate bolt is snug, make sure all accessory/allen plugs are teflon’d and snug, and go from there. That big of a leak HAS to be visible from the topside of the engine bay, one would think.
I finally dropped my pump and replaced the front main seal and oil-pan gasket… I now have a leak-free motor! Use that as some inspiration and get that bitch done!!
