Im in the process of tacking up an intercooler to my 91 LS Manual. I was looking through the bumper the other day and theres 2 finned tubes that run in front of the radiator. The results of my search seem to say that these are transmission coolers and are only used on automatics? My question is, what are these for and can they/should they be removed? They are taking up quite a bit of room where the intercooler should sit.
That is not the AC lines or the tranny lines… the manual tranny does not ahve those… what that is is the power steering lines. Some say you can take it fof and loop the lines. some say you sohuldn’t. the people taht ahve taken it fof and looped them have had no problems with overheating the power steering fludi as far as I know
they are for the auto tranny cooler. I just let them open, I run exactly the same as i did with the OEM rad. I just dont have a fan so i heat up in the city.
Okay seriously. All this wrong info is jsut retarded. For the last time, they are NOT his A/C nor his auto tranny cooler. First of all, the AC lines are behidn the radiator. Second of all, he has a manual, third of all, it’s his POWER STEERING COOLER LINES. If you don’t know what you are talking about, don’t give any advice out as clearly you’ll all jsut mis-guide him, or you didn’t read his first post to udnerstand what he’s asking. Pickup a helms or a cheap haynes/chiltons.
Tchleung, I have read your many posts in the past, including your intercooler setup and I trust you know what youre saying. So basically, I can go buy some rubber hose and do away with the fins? AC I plan on ditching but power steering I want to keep around.
I would use a rubber hose that can withstand high temperatures of oil and water jsut incase. As lnog as you’re not autocrossing you’ll be fine. Although someoen did say they autox’ed as well and they never boiled their fluids. What manfiold/turbo did you get to clear AC. AC is such a bitch in our cars… no room
Let me second that those finned lines are Power Steering lines. I havent ever capped those lines with rubber hose but i’ve read its possible also without problems.
but…
First of all, the AC lines are behind the radiator.
Thats false! The A/C lines are in front of the radiator and condenser.

Cool beans!! Ill bend them as well then. I should probably make another thread but Id like to ask anyway. Am I taking the correct steps in mounting the intercooler before I run any pipe? I already know my AC is going and my battery is being relocated. This is a step by step build that Im doing as Im not well off enough to purchase it all at once. As you can probably tell, the intercooler has already been purchased
Also, at Xenocron, I read in a post that you own a 91 with the 91 front end. I also read intercoolers are a “challenge” to mount because of space issues. Do you have any light to shine my way as far as making more room?

I haven’t seen a “clean” setup with a 90-91 bumper. The way I see it you have 2 options…
Chunk, that doesnt look too shabby! I wonder if a longer intercooler was used, would it hide the pipes on the inside? I think it would look even better if there were only intercooler there.
I dont really like the look of the 92-93 bumper because of the way the turn signals turn with the curve of the bumper. Plus thats a hundred and some dollars that I could be putting towards finishing my turbo build. If I can find the setup ultra cheap and already the color of my car (black) ill probably switch anyway for cosmetic sake. Now I need to look around for 91 front/intercooler pics.
looks like you can just cap-off the 2 lines that go out to the cooling tubes? toss some rubber caps on there and secure with thoes metal strappy things w/ the 1 screw (what the hell are they called?)
