Cooling fan on INtercooler

Anyone ever thought of running a side mount intercooler and mounting one of those small aftermarket cooling fans on it, I just figure they make a hella diff on our radiators why not on a intercooler. Just rig it to always be on.

on a side mount I guess it’d be possible you’d just have to have one custom made as I dont know of anyone who makes those currently. I think the cost would outweight the benefit

think about what a fan would do traveling down the highway at 70mph. more harm then good. It’d block the airflow. The only purpose it would serve is to prevent heat soak during high traffic situations.

Good point i just remebered that the radiator cooling fan onlyu serves a purpose when you been sittin still too long. And i’m not too woried about high boost levels in traffic so i guess this wouldnt be too good of an idea.

I thinks its a good idea if you’re running a side mount. On a side mount there’s not much airflow to block. I think it would work but for the price you could get a good used fmic that I think would work better.

well this is way off topic but the reason i posted this is because aside from my 93 ls project i’m starting to build up a 87 t-bird, with a chevy 350 twin turbo and i wanted to run two side mount intercoolers and was wondering if anyone though it would be a good idea assuming i would be able to find the right size cooling fans.

not much airflow to block? Then why would you again decrease airflow by putting a fan in there? DSM’s run sidemounts, NO ONE uses fans.

I don’t know anything about Tbirds or DSM’s but if an intercooler is mounted on the side where there is not much airflow, how would a fan hurt the performance. If he is running dual sidemounts in front, that’s a different story.

I’ve thought of this before too. Rather than putting the fan on the front of the intercooler it might work to put it on the back to pull air through. I’d use a switch to controll it in proper situations but it wouldn’t be on all the time. Summit sells 10in fans for $65 but I know theres other places that would sell them for cheaper. I was thinking about doing this but I can’t think of any situations where it would be usefull, if it even works effective enough.

also you have to understand that pushing air onto a surface that does not evacuate the air at the same speed causes the air to get hot. An intercooler can only consume so much air. If there is a layer of air on the front of the intercooler that does not flow at the same pace as the air around it then it will cause that layer of air to rise in temperature, therefore hindering the whole reasoning behind an intercooler

You also don’t know too much about physics either. Fan + sidemount = bad, end of story.

I never said this was the best idea, i said i think it could work, but I also said it probably would not be as good as a fmic. I never said I was a physics major but I know enough about physics to know that a fan would create more of a cooling effect than ambient air from the engine bay or inside a fender.

Why cant air get to a sidemount? Is this some sort of new fangled air that ignores physics? PLENTY of air gets to my sidemount. And supras seem to be able to lay down 500whp on their sidemounts… interesting…

And fan WOULD decrease flow because at 70mph it would block more flow then it could generate. Seeeeeeeeeee…

And who are the idiots mounting intercoolers in the engine? That’s NOT a sidemount intercooler. We’re talking about SIDEMOUNTS here. :loser:

I did not say side mounts get no air, I said they don’t get as much as front mounts. Yes I know we are talking about side mounts which are mounted on theside I did not say they do not make power.

The guy asked if anyone ever though of putting a fan on a side mount intercooler. I still think it may work.

I didn’t tell the guy to go out and buy a fan and put on there. I think i recommended a front mount.

If the intercooler was front mounted and there was a fan on it and the fan was on, it would decrease ariflow once a certain speed was reached.

Once airflow being pushed into the fan from the forward motion of the car exceeded the fans airlflow capability it would create a high pressure area in front of the fan. Since air flows in the route of least resistance it will go around the fan (and intercooler) instead of through it. This high pressure area would increase as the speed of the car increased and the intercooler would recieve less and less airflow.

This happens on my car with my manually controlled fans. If I’m on the freeway with the fans on I will not recieve as much cooling from the radiator than if the fans were off. I’ve observed this with the water temp gauge (autometer, not the idiot light) and turning the fans on and off at the same speed at the same ambient air temperatures.

The same thing happens with poorly designed ram intake systems. Once a certain speed is hit a high pressure area will develope at the opening for the ram air intake because the air flow going into the intake exceeds the engines ability to use it and air begins to “stack up”.

As for the original question of putting a fan on a side mount. Sure it would help…every little bit of cooling helps. But the gains would be very small from the small fan you’re going to put on the small intercooler. And it would only help at low speeds where you not going to be pushing much boost anyway. There’s a reason all intercooler upgrades for turbo cars that come with stock side mounts convert to front mounts.

WHat about from a drag racing point of view when you are building up boost about to take off a front mount won’t be doing anything.

The reason I ask is a friend of mine has made a ice box for drag racing basically an ice to air intercooler on a Mitsi Evo. Perhaps a fan could achieve a similar result ?? I guess they can’t flow enough air to cool the charge significantly…:bow:

You can’t make boost sitting at the start line. The best you can do is have no vacuum and no boost and have the engine reved to a point that when you drop the clutch it will make boost almost instantly.

Yes you can actually launch controll units … Many people are making boost while waiting at the line, I don’t know the ins and outs but people certainly do. Perhaps they use the hand brake??:think:
