Create truly glossy ambery oemy looky bumper lightsy! (amber turn signals paint)

Look how my lights came out, i used Krylon stained glass yellow paint (all i could find at micahels) and a clear coat. I sanded them down before i painted and sanded again after i painted, then put clear coat on.

This is before i put more coats on it

With clear coat

Should i apply buffing compound and polishing compound to them eventhough they already look shiny?

yes…

humm… now to find my old bumper lenses, sand them down from my old crappy amber paint job, then do this…

thanks for the writeup…

 that’s what I had to do

so what do you guys think of my lights. Here it is on the car

nice write up.
i have done my tails which i just sold and had them over a yr and looked the same the day i painted them, and also did my bumper lights but not with the tamiya paint. and as you can see in the pic it matched the JDM side markers almost perfect.

Thanks for the write up…

ya, this write up was quite helpful. i redid my stupid lense 3x to get the perfect color. but for some reason one of them werent fully clear and perfect looking while the other was. might have been to much sanding or not enough. because the paint was all uneven on it…but ya, thanks for the write up, i’ll prob post pics soon if i can get it

I use to do it on my prelude tail lights long time ago. I don’t do it anymore because a Westminster motorcycle cop pull me over on Bolsa St. Lecture me about the tail lights and gave me a fixin’ ticket. I swap it out for a pair of stock prelude tails.

I took it to WPD and they check it off.

But nice write-up though…

good write up. from what believe i think the krylon stained glass is discontinued? anyways im going to be doing this but ill try to avoid sanding the clear step and maybe go to the rubbing compound and polish… btw i dont have any fine cut polish… all i have is turtle wax green rubbing compound and step 1/2 of megauirs 3 step system…

hey matty how much coats did you put on with the krylon? it seems really yellow especially the first 3 coats still isnt that dark… and your pic of it installed on the car looks even darker than your initial pics… its easier to work with the 90-91 bumper lenses since they separate from the actual housing and you can lay them flat

my lenses look really clear and bright in the sun, but in the shade they look kinda dark, i put like 20 coats of yellow stained glass paint i think lol you just have to keep putting coats after coats until it gets the color u like it, but it will come out orangeish after like 10 or 15 coats lol, then i put the clear coat on after they dried over night, then i put the buffing compound and polishing compound on

so u didnt sand btwn the clear and the stained glass? you only buffed after the clear was put on? i put like 6-7 coats and its looking pretty good… i dont think ill put any more coats… and i dont even think i need a clear coat since its pretty damn glossy already…

i shoulda gotten tamiya though it woulda came out better… the tamiya looks really runny and vibrant and it looks almost as though it “soaks” into the lense… maybe ill get an extra set and use tamiya since its a ot cheaper too

also it woulda been better using the stained glass on cleared lenses since the oem ones have the ornage reflector inside its kinda a bit darker than the rest of the lense where its painted

when you guys put the clear on… did it crackle as well? cuz when i put acrylic clear over the stained glass paint it started to crackle… it hasnt dried completley so i havent started to wet sand yet

nope nothin cracked on mine, yes i did sand them down after the clear coat with like 1000 grit paper and do it really lightly, all i had, then i put the buffing compound and polishing compound on

shitty… did you use acrylic clear? cuz thats what i used and its kinda lupy and crackled… bah… if it turns out shit ill just leave it with no clear… i was bored and just decided to put clear even though w/o clear it looked good… i guess ill just spray a few caots of the stained glass then wetsand that and polish it without clear

here’s my set

well this thread has been really helpful…I went down to my local hobby store to buy the supplies but they were out of the tamiya red…so I ended up just using the orange…it seems like they turned out pretty good so far…I haven’t clear coded them yet they seem a little dark compared with the jdm sidemarker hopefully after I sand them with 1500 and clear them they will lighten up a bit…I’ll post another pick after I’ve completed them…

looks really good… you should paint your sidemarkers to match cuz they are a bit diff in tint and the lenses are much newer and transparent looking

finally got a chance to put them on…
haven’t done the side markers yet…
they look great…
nice teg tip…

ne1 done this wid like the smoked effect wanna see a few pics!
