DA Starter Relay with Pics

me too, replacing (or bypassing) the ignition switch has been the latest step I have made to fix the starter problem. This one really seems to have worked since I have had zero starting problems for about a year now. As long as you use a new or well rebuilt switch and solder/shrink or carefully crimp all your connections I don’t see why this part of the system wouldn’t be good as new

Hey sloppy, where did the pictures go??

Not sure, I think g2ic changed their website and tried to host photos on their site but screwed up…
For now you can find them on http://www.302found.com/albums/?name=sell_t031609 , about 1/2 way down the page under the cherry picker.

Cool, thanks. I have a G3 Integra, I think I found my starter relay on the driver side by the fuse box. Had to remove the metal protector behind the cover. For the life of me, I could not get any tools in there to remove it. So I plugged in the new one and taped it tightly so it wouldn’t bounce around. Also replaced my starter, battery, main power relay and cleaned by battery terminals. So far so good. We’ll see if my starting issue returns or not. I had the same problem as yours, would just hear 1 click when I turned the key

hey sloppy, did you ever figure out what was causing your starting issue? i have the exact same problem on my 97 gsr. have replaced the starter, battery, main relay and power relay. every time i replace the starter, the car is fine for a couple of weeks then the problem comes right back. very frustrating

So if it’s not the main or starter relay it could be the ignition switch? Explain more please I’m really starting to think the problem is the ignition.

Yea at first I focused on the battery, wires to/from the starter, grounds, starter relay, even the clutch pedal switch. After I thought I had fixed the problem it would come back,… yes super frustrating lol especially when it means bump starting or worse. The latest fix that seems to have finally done it (knock-on-wood) for over a year now was replacing the whole ignition switch. A few other posts here on g2ic mentioned this as possible root cause many times. My theory is that when other parts of the system are weak (bad starter, corroded grounds, insufficient wiring), it puts a strain on the ignition switch contacts, and after 15-20 years, surprise! - it fails.

Did you replace just the ignition starter switch:

or did you replace the ignition switch with the lock cylinder:

I had my car broken into a few months after I got it but they couldn’t take it cause of my Ravelco anti theft system. Not sure how much they damaged the ignition switch or if the insurance replaced it or just mickey moused it back together. This could be my issue. So replace the whole thing or just the switch??

I thought it might be my battery cables since one day when it wouldn’t start I cleaned them and it started right up. But the problem came back a couple days later. Cables are in good condition. Getting tired of this lol

I would say if you can put the key in and turn it, and the column unlocks, and lights/radio come on, then the lock assembly is fine. Just replace the switch. That’s what I did, except I got it from the dealer for like $70… they call it a “steering switch”. Probably much cheaper at Napa.

I’ll probably try to get it online from one of those oem websites. Prices are usually cheaper there. Can you recommend one or have you never used one of those sites?

So I drove to the store today and when I tried to start my car nothing. Got home, turned her off, then decided to give it a shot. Bitch fired right up. Now I have a check engine light again. Most likely it’s the crankshaft sensor. For some reason, when she won’t start, sometimes she throws up a disconnected crankshaft sensor code even though it has a brand new sensor. From what I’ve gathered from other threads, a bad crankshaft sensor would not be causing the problem I have, so not sure why it pops up. The Acura dealership nearby has the ignition switch for $58. Probably gonna pick one up tomorrow. Also charging my battery tonight. It’s fairly new and I don’t drive my car at all cause I am currently not working. Last week I pulled over, shut her off, but left the radio, AC and hazard lights on while a girl bobbed up and down on my meat shifter lol. Car wouldn’t start after that. So maybe I killed the battery and since I hardly drive it, have not given the alternator enough time to charge it back up. Might swing by Autozone or Napa to have them test my alternator as well. Any thoughts on my crankshaft sensor issue? Stupid code

When you get the ignition switch let post up if this fixes your issue. I’m having the same issue but I dont think its the starter relay or the MFR. My car eithers cranks and starts up or doesnt do anything. Doesnt the MFR just control fuel, so my car would crank but not fire? I have no crank at all and have to bump start it when it does this. Replaced the starter 3 times, pulled all the grounds sanded the contacts and cleaned them, nothing. I can hear the starter relay clicking, its been freed from its normal position and is hanging below the dash. SO that tells me its good. IM going to go through all the grounds again just to double check.

I’ll definitely post if the ignition switch fixes my problem. I have found SOOO many threads like this one where the OP never comes back to let us know if their fix worked or not. Most of the time when I replace my starter, it’s good for a couple of weeks just like this last time. I even replaced the starter relay and battery with one that has higher cranking numbers. Good for two weeks then stuck on the side of the road with a girl that had a sore jaw LOL. At least I had all the endorphins going through me to keep me happy as my car rolled down the hill on it’s own so I could bump it.

How does your car behave after switching the starter? I also changed my main relay which I guess on these cars is the same as the MFR.

Here is a link to a looong thread I have on another Integra site discussing this issue with other peeps:

Honestly the OP here has been great in giving results. I have gleaned a lot and am sure its the ignition switch now. I just want to double check, and am wondering if my issue is really it since I hear a series of clicks when I turn the key. The beeping stops, i hear the starter relay click and another up front. If the ignistion swithc was the culprit, would it still send a series of signals that are getting through to everything but the starter? These arent the low battery starter clicks. The relay clicks and one more up front. Just no crank, dead silence.

Best of luck with getting your issue fixed. Lulz at sore jaw.

I agree, the OP here has been great about coming back with results. I just meant in general, I have found a ton of threads similar to this one where the OP never returns to let us know if what he tried worked or not.

Haha for sure man. Good luck!

Is that a leading question you’re asking lol? Of course I’ve used them, have you ever done an internet search? Here’s some: http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/ http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org/ http://www.acuraoemparts.com/ http://www.hondapartsunlimited.com/ http://www.oemacuraparts.com/ http://www.acurapartswarehouse.com/
I’ll stop short of giving an endorsement, everybody has their favorite…

I think you guys are on the right track suspecting the ignition switch itself. There is actually another thread here on g2ic where they describe how to pull the switch, clean it yourself, and put it in for a second run. Seems to work ok for some people. I just went the lazy route and replaced it, and starting has been perfect ever since. Makes sense to me that 20-year-old ignition switch can be the weakest link in the system when it gets dirty, I guess it can get so corroded and pitted that it can’t flow enough juice to run the solenoid. There’s a reason that switch has such fat wiring going to it. And the MFR probably doesn’t have anything to do with it, if it were that the starter would crank all day and no start…

hahahaha best time for a little bump start, with a girl in the car and people watching. Good luck hope it works out.

well, im so lazy that i havent gone to the dealership to get the ignition switch. they actually have it for only $57 so no need to order it online when shipping costs would probably make it not worth it. just need to get off my ass and go get it. most likely this is my problem since my car got broken into when i first bought it but the assholes couldnt start it. they probably messed up my ignition switch trying to jam shit in there and it has taken its toll on the starting system over the years. car has been fine since i charged my battery overnight, so i guess i did kill the battery with that girl lol. i didnt think i lasted that long LOL
