Finally Getting My Turbo Set Up Going

The finished exhaust looks great! Excellent work!

I would really suggest fixing that transmission gap before driving any more. Even that slight misalignment will put excess load on the input shaft bearings and probably isn’t allowing the clutch to contact the flywheel quite right. It would be better to fix it now than put any more miles on it than necessary. I certainly wouldn’t wait until 500 miles before fixing it!

Thanks, I appreciate it. I love the way it came out and the way it sounds when I’m cruising around.

As for the trans. The plan is to pull the axles and half shaft back off tomorrow evening when I get off work. Then I’ll be able to wiggle the trans back slightly and get those wires out of there. I’ve been driving it as is though, the gap is so tiny I doubt it’s hurting anything, (gap is smaller now than what that photo shows) but like you said I don’t wanna risk it. I never ghetto rig or half ass things on my car. This new job of mine has just been wearing me down to where I just don’t care and want things done as quick as possible. I hate working on junk ass cars all week and then coming home and having no energy or enthusiasm to work on my own car. I’ve been thinking about it though and I’m mad at myself for not taking more time and being patient enough to get it right the first time. That’s not me, that’s not how I have built this car thus far. I will get fixed. Hopefully tomorrow night.

Now those stripped threads in the block…ehhhh idk yet. I’m going to see if my boss has a tap and die set with the correct size to try and re-thread it, or use one size bigger and make new threads and use a new bolt. I’ll figure that out as soon as I can.

Update on the clutch. I haven’t stalled out anymore lol. I’m getting much more used to it and it’s starting to feel a lot smoother and not so bang bang…Idk if that makes sense. It’s getting better. I’ve got 140 miles on it so only 360 to go. I’ve been driving smooth and not beating on it, but i’d be lying if I said I haven’t gotten into boost. I’ve shifted on it mildly aggressive in boost just to get a feel for it and it grabs like a champ

Problem solved =]

Pulled things back apart and got the trans back just far enough to get the wires that were stuck out. Turns out it was a bit more than just two wires. This is what I removed

Turns out it was the two wires, a bunch of electrical tape and a plastic butt connector. That connector was the main reason for the gap. It didn’t squish flat like the wires and tape did. All is well though now. It’s all been removed and the trans now sits flush against the block. I didn’t get a picture of it cause my phone had died. I’ll get one tomorrow for the hell of it though.

Next thing is to fix those stripped threads for that bolt

Oh and I’m bummed. My downpipe got scraped on something and it ripped my heat wrap that’s on it. Worse than that I scratched up one my of welds =[ lol Hopefully it doesn’t scrape too much more or go all the way through that spot. I’ll have to weld it back together if that happens

When’s this thing gonna get tuned on the dyno? Can’t wait To see the numbers!

Good question. Idk honestly. I gotta get this clutch fully broken in and make sure it’s all good, then I wanna get some tires (Nt01’s) so I can actually hook at full boost, then It’ll get on the dyno. I’m just broke right now though. I punched my laptop screen a few weeks ago and shattered it so I had to buy a new laptop and I spent way more than I should of. I’ve got vacation coming up in July as well. It’ll get on the dyno before the end of the year. Just don’t know exactly when or who will do it yet. I’d like to wait till the weather is cooler anyway. This hot and humid crap just isn’t boost weather. This being Texas though I’ve got a looong time before the weather cools down.

Car has been running with the turbo setup for exactly a year now, well tomorrow it will be a year. I fired it up on June 21st last year. A lot has happened in the last year with it, but a dyno tune isn’t one of those things lol. It’s still running surprisingly well for nothing more than a datalog tune. I call it that because the guy who tuned it never saw the car in person. Only datalogs I sent him

Runs from last weekend.

I hit just as hard as that nitrous did lol not bad for a little rolling antilag to help build boost. I ran out of gear though. Having short gears sucks

Didn’t eve realize the 240 was in the far right lane. He is 2jz swapped and making way more power than us as you can tell by the fact that he was just gone

Also drove the car in the rain for the first time in awhile. It came out of no where and I wasn’t happy about it =[ Made for a cool cell phone shot though

Getting dyno tuned tomorrow!!! =]

Put the 13lb spring back in the wastegate so it’ll be somewhere around that boost wise. Hope it all goes well and I don’t run into any issues or problems. Fingers crossed

I will have a video of it to post if all goes well. Wish me luck

Been following your build since you first went turbo. So many changes and improvements over the years.
Definitely an exciting time
Good luck, Hope she puts down some strong #'s, and congrats on an awesome DIY street build

Thanks man.

Well it survived the 3 hour drive down to Houston for the tune, survived the dyno, and survived the drive back home =] And I couldn’t be happier with the results

I’ll get to the numbers in a second, first I wanna say how nice it is to finally of found a tuner who knows what they’re doing and who is super cool and down to earth. Jason at St00pidfast was an awesome guy to meet and I’m really glad I took my car to him. He knows what he’s doing and doesn’t mess around doing 100 pulls. 3 pulls on the dyno was all it took to get the car dialed in. I spent more time after the tune just hanging out talking with him about cars than the time it took to actually tune the car lol. Turns out the shop he tunes out of is called Autobahn Motorsports and they specialize in Supras. I had never seen so many Supras in one place outside of tx2k. It was pretty cool talking with the owner of Autobahn, Tommy who has been featured in a few magazines with his 228mph silver supra. They’re builds are incredible

Anyway on the car. Got a shot of it rolling on the dyno

(EDIT) Got the sound in the video to come out better this time around. Not sure what happened with the upload last time. Made the video a bit better as well, still doesn’t look all that great for being shot in hd though

Car made 308hp, 215tq on 13lbs with e85

It’s definitely a lot more fun now. Last night on the way home I was heading back home last night some stupid guy in a stock cobalt kept flying by me, then slowing down, flying by and slowing down. I got tired of it so finally I waited till he was flying by me and let him get about a car ahead then rolled into in 4th and blew his doors off. Idk if the road was sketchy or if the tires weren’t wanting to hold, but I was fighting the wheel back and forth to kept the front end from getting away from me. After that the cobalt stayed well behind me and stopped acting like an ass.

I know this might sound stupid since it’s really not much power, but if it were any more I don’t think the car would be able to put it down. Right now when full boost comes on it feels like it’s at the limit of what this chassis with my tire and suspension setup can handle. It just barely has the grip from a 60 roll, anything below that and it just blows the tires off. I need to upgrade the tires for sure, or let some air out and see if that helps at all

Here are some of the the surpas at the shop. I counted 9 at the shop, this photo doesn’t show them all

dayummmmmmm. dopeness all around.

Lol

Went out and did work tonight. Car runs phenomenally!

So after talking about getting a fire extinguisher for my car I finally got one =]

Found this automotive B & C grade one at Walmart for $15

I wanted to mount it close to the driver seat so if something happened it would be within easy reach. I ended up mounting it on the underside of the dash panel

I hope I NEVER have to use it, but it’s a nice thing to have just in case something bad were to happen especially for just $15

:up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up::up:

Hey Man, congrats on finally getting the car tuned! I know it can be a stressful day, but it’s rewarding if everything goes well. Enjoy it! Now that you can test out your new setup, you will probably find things to upgrade to match the power…that’s exactly what happened to me.

lol thanks

Thanks man. I definitely need to upgrade my tires, that’s for damn sure! I miss being about to get on it at slow speeds. Having to wait till I’m already going 60 kinda sucks =\ But once boost comes on it’s all good =] I need tires and replace all the bushings on the car as well. I would love to do that, I just don’t wanna sit and burn them out and all that right now. I’ll wait till it’s cooler outside to start doing that stuff. Closer to the end of the year. Stays hot here in Texas till November. Plus I’m trying not to spend any more money. I’m still saving to buy a new daily. Not sure if I mentioned it or not, but the plan is to get a 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth in a few months if all goes well.

No updates on the car right now. I washed it…that’s about it. I was bored after washing it last night so I did a little walk around video with my phone

//youtu.be/tuVZWHINCAU

Haven’t posted anything in awhile. Not really much going on with the car to post about. As of now the car is still running great (knock on wood). I haven’t had a single issue with the tune and it’s been running flawlessly.

I did notice something last weekend though that kinda bummed me out. It appears someone ran into the back of my car recently and put some dents in my back bumper =[ I have no idea when it would of happened. I only take the car out to the meets on the weekends and normally I have the car backed into the spot. It sucks cause I know these indentations are never going to come out of this plastic, but what bothers me more than the fact that it happened is the fact that I don’t know when it happened or who did it.

To the right of the license plate you can see a big rectangular shaped indention like a license plate hit it, and to the right of the license plate you can see a little circle indention and a line next to it. I don’t know if someone rolled into my car, or backed into or what. It sucks either way cause those will never go away and I’ll notice it every time I look at the car

Anyway apart from that crappy news. I got some new, well new to me tires for the car. I bought these old (2004) Yokohama Advans off a friend for $30 and had them mounted for $20. I figured they are pretty old so they probably wouldn’t hook very well or any better than the S Drives I was running before, but for $50 total investment…it was worth a shot to see. I just wanted to try and get something cheap that will allow me to do my 40 rolls again.

Here’s what they look like mounted on the car. Much meatier than the old S Drives (on rear)

Turns out they aren’t any better than my old tires though unfortunately. It’s still nothing but a giant spinfest from anything below 60. Oh well though. Like I said I’m only into them for $50 so it was worth a shot. Maybe they’ll soften up a bit as I continue to drive on them, doubt it but maybe.

One day I’ll buy good tires. I could if I wanted to right now, but I’m still saving up to buy a new car for a daily so tires will have to wait

I would have gotten extra cheap rims and mount those tires on it, instead of using the rims that are already on the car.

I haven’t posted in here in such a long time. Been so busy with work it’s insane.

Quick update. I sold those slicks pretty much immediately. They sucked on the street and didn’t hook. I put my old S Drives back on and that’s what I’m still rolling with. I got boost by gear installed so now i’m only running 6lbs in 2nd and full boost in 3rd & 4th, in 5th I dropped the boost back down slightly. I also am running 16lbs now instead of 13, not sure if I ever mentioned that. Car is still running really well. No issues have come up (knock on wood).

I got a new job awhile back so I haven’t had much time to mess with the car. We have a dyno here at work (Boost Logic) so I strapped the car down a few weeks ago to see what power it’s making now that it’s on 16lbs. I made 308hp 215tq last time when I was tuned on 13lbs. Here is the video of it on 16lbs

//youtu.be/PgQjQdkHwBI

I was really surprised by the numbers. This little stock motor is a lot of fun!

Another thing that’s happened recently is I finally bought a new car!!! I was so sick of driving my pos db1 as my daily I couldn’t take it anymore so a little less than 2 weeks ago I went down to the Fiat dealer and bought my first brand new car. Picked up a 2015 Fiat 500 Abarth =] I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. It’s such a fun little car to drive, and it sounds absolutely amazing for being stock. I’d go into more details, but I’m at work so shouldn’t really be doing this right now lol. Anyway, here are some photos of that car

Wooow. I have no posted in this thread in a long time…oops

Update on the car. I got R88’s for it finally

went to do the first test hit on them and was only hitting 13lbs instead of 16. I did another pull and only saw 10lbs. Got home started checking my vacuum lines and when I pulled on the one attached to the wastegate I saw the entire wastegate move. Then I noticed this =[

When I went to touch it the entire thing just broke clean off…

So that sucked. I contacted the company that made it because it has a lifetime warranty and they told me that I should of braced it to help support the weight because that is a known failure point. I told them if it’s a known failure point they should of braced it in the first place when they sold it to me. I decided against having them fix it or getting another from them and ordered another miniram from Go-Autoworks. They told me it’s 3 to 4 weeks though for them to make it =[ So the car has been down a few weeks now and I can’t wait to get it running again to test those new tires.

In the mean time though I figured it’s a good time to go ahead and take all the bronze stuff out of the engine bay and have it all powder coated. I also decided I was tired of bronze and went with something completely different. It’s a 3 stage color so it wasn’t cheap, but I think it’s going to look awesome when it’s done. It wont match the red car what so ever, but don’t care lol. I’ll post photos of it when I get it all back from being done.

Here is a photo though of everything I took off to get coated

Nice work man, Sucks to hear about that exhaust. That company should either reimburse you, or give you a new one.
