I’ve been reading other FI threads and everybody’s recommending the longer LS gearing to allow the turbo to spool up better. Can anyone go into more detail on why the LS tranny would be a better candidate when going boost? TIA for the replies.
Longer gears allow a better chance to reach max boost, especially on the lag happy bigger housings high boost applications.
So longer gearing to allow it to reach max boost. Hmmm. What about this? I always thought that at a certain rpm the boost would be a given number, say 7psi at 5000rpms. Then when you shift to the next gear say with a GSR tranny, the rpms are kept up higher and you will therefore be at a higher boost compared to the LS gearing where you will be at a lower boost number since the rpms will drop a bit more compared to the GSR tranny scenario. I hope that makes some kind of sense.

i myself prefer (as do most of the others in those threads) a closer ratio tranny over the ls. the main benefits i see are that at the track i can run 24" slicks & with a redline of 8000 rpms i can still trap at 120mph without needing to shift into 5th. this is with a jdm y1 tranny (kinda of a pseudo-hybrid tranny of sorts, ls 4.266 final with b16 gears) with an ls 5th. but i would still choose a straight gs-r ys1 over the ls if i had that choice.
I belive it is so you can stay in the boost longer i could be wrong tho ![]()
ok well i thought i knew what tranny was better but now im hella confused :argh: ok lets say you have 400whp turbo’d LS, and the car is daily driven. now seen the car will be on the street most of the time what tranny is better and why? can anyone please answer me this???

oops sorry my computer froze and posted twice…
well, my experience with the gsr tranny, it is good but for a turbo car id prefere an LS tranny especially if you street race. I use to just burn the tires in 1st and second with the gsr tranny. with the LS tranny it made my launching easier. I would burn just 1/2 though 1st.
shorter gears will make the car not as fun to drive, b/c youll be goin thru the gears much faster.

words of wisdom… words of wisdom… :loser:
Matt, you are funny. GSR tranny would be better in my opinion. This debate has been discussed over and over and the racers prefer ther the GSR.

Turn on your AIM doc!
From experience I have a B16a Tranny on my car now and with the Turbo it really sucks. I am topped out at 125mph at 7200 rpms in 5th gear. With my stock LS tranny I could hit 110 mph in 3rd gear. I am in the process of swapping my stock tranny back in, hopefully it will feel alot better with the turbo setup.

I dunno if I’m funny, or that he just makes it so easy… or who knows, maybe a little of both? ![]()

correct. reason being: you stated an opinion as fact. some people prefer shorter gears, thats why people arent putting LS trannies in their GSR’s, because that would suck. But oh wait, you dont like GSR’s because you have to shift more… riiiiiiiiiight
