PIC request HID retrofit

We need output shots…

You should sand the flutes down right in front of the projector, will make for much better output.

Here’s one I made for a customer. I’ll post pictures mounted on the car later this week.

i would like to see a two beam setup. one regular lens near the inside more, projector mounted more on the outside.

i might buy a pair of these ebay sets and see what i can muster up.

I love the E46 shrouds. They look way more oem than the black shrouds I have that pretty much cover the whole reflector. I can’t wait to see the “on the car” output shots.

OMG its Weasel, I tried it. It was doomed to fail from the start though due to the radiator support. You could cut that area out of the core support to fit the back of the projector, but I didn’t want to go that route so I scrapped that retro and started over. If you could find a small enough projector (front to back) you might be able to just move it closer to the lense and not cut any of the back of the housing out. Now that I’m thinking about it, I almost want to try it again. Here’s the only pictures I had of the progress. I know it doesn’t look clean… It would have.

sorry it too so long…but here they are…light output of 5000k TSX-R retro-fit in Fluted lenses at about 45ft.-50ft.

boohoohoo… no sweet cut-off!!! BUT… no glare!!!

now with my foglights on…took off the glare guard and aimed them higher than the low beam

here’s a picture of the side cutoff…picture came out a bit blurry

for the hundredth time i wasn’t planing on sanding down the fluted lenses at all. it doesn’t flow with the headlights or look nice in the DAs in my opinion. i know i lost the sweet cut-off but im ok with that. i have good out-put without distracting on-coming traffic, that’s all i wanted. IN MY OWN OPINION…sanded down DA JDM headlights looks terrible, even if it did have a retrofit in it or not. it just completely ruins the flow of the headlight and car all together. also, i will NEVER go the ebay one-piece headlight route, i rather stick to the USDM headlights.

^^^ i agree with that…

gotta get my car out for some better shots, but heres a head on

I don’t know… The glare isn’t horrible, but it is there. You can see several feet up the wall has a bluish hue from the light reflecting up above the cutoff. It seems like you could get the same type of output by simply using a PnP kit with casper shield glare guards like Blkack1 has. If you’re happy with them though, thats all that matters.

i just installed my 3k fog lights i want to get some 5k hids. all these cars look pretty bad ass makes me want mine now.

believe it or not rollinmyda…with the fluted lense on…it is LESS blinding/destructive than a clear lense headlight, i did a side-by-side test with both headlights aimed the same height, one with the lens on, the other with/out and i walked about 50ft-55ft away from the front of the car and the fluted lens one was LESS intense. wish i should of taken some pictures, but i remember you stating that u were gonna do a retro-fit using JDM headlights…you should try it. you can simple do the test in ur living room and get the same results…i assure you. also, people that have done retro-fits can vouch for this…pictures of light output will never look as good as it does in person. that bluish hue that you speak of doesn’t do a thing, it’s actually there because i did the color mod and is under the light cut-off.

oh yeah, have u seen how terrible output is in PnP kit for the JDM headlights…it’s the worse thing you will ever see. it’s not so much the glare but the light out-put…it’s just literally spots everwhere with no hotspot at all…i ran them in my one pieces for a week and was sick of it and went back to my halogens 'til i did my retro-fit.

i actually do have a picture of both lens on and off…picture taken about 25ft.

no fluted lens

fluted lens

I’m sorry if I’ve been sounding like a dick. I’m not trying to hate on your retro. I think its far superior to any PnP setup. Like you said, you’re not as addicted to the cutoff line as you used to be or I am now. The cutoff is my favorite part of my retrofit so I guess out of my own personal preference I felt I had to suggest the clear lense. It looks great man, don’t mind me.

it’s all good…i just wanted to get all the facts straight for everyone out there. i’m pretty sure 97% of all the retro-fits that are done are on clear lenses. when i was searching for references and asking for help, i got a lot of mixed/wrong answers…if any. it was a pain, so i just decided to jump into it and do it myself. also, i wouldn’t want to give out the wrong information to those that are looking into doing a retro-fit in fluted lenses. of course they can always sand down the flutes or get the clear 1-pieces but if they don’t…at lease they have something to reference off of. thanks for all your input.

are these ebay’s or jdm’s they look like the jdm g3 headlights

what about the idea of sanding down a portion of the headlight as opposed to all of it?

i think this looks clean to be sanded down

Those are JDM one pieces. I was attempting a JDM G3 “look” but I ran into more issues than the retrofit was worth so I scrapped a few hundred dollars worth of parts and tried again.

i thought about it but…nah!!!

anybody did any prject like this on stock headlights??? jw

VX209DA…I didn’t do it myself, but my brother did. I had them on for a couple years until I got fed up with them (ballasts and bulb going out…and no money to replace) and stuck the halogens back on, but now I’m putting them back on. I just need to find the darn retainers for the headlight. I see you’re from Stockton too. I plan on going to that shop down Hammer lane to get it installed.

Did you guys use the stock retainers to hold the bulb in, or a different one? I actually posted a thread today on it. I lost the ones that I had and the stock ones are just a tad to big to fit. Is there a place where I can buy these or do I have to go to a junkyard and get lucky? I’ll post pics of the backside of both the stock and retrofitted ones.

oh cool! i would like to see pics… lol yeah post it up when u can =] uh u mean autosport209? on hammer.
