Smoke from valve cover?

:auto: :gunright:

I was leaving work today, and decided to beat on the old teg a little bit. I had it floored up to about 90mph. As I came up to a stop sign, I noticed she was running a little rough, almost as if the motor was missing a little bit. I have no PCV setup, it is just an open tube. I noticed there was an unusually large amount of oily smoke coming from the tube on my valve cover. I’m guessing it’s something to do with the rings. Any opinions?

the same thing happen to me and it ended up being blown rings. get a compression test done

O.K. I watched F&TF too but I still dunno how the fuck somebody gets blown/fried rings? Rings sit on the piston’s ring lands and push out against the wall for compression. The piston takes all the abuse. Pistons sees all the heat. I have never ever ever seen something that had to do with blow by have anything at all to do with just rings. Most of the time if the pistons are stock broken ring lands or broken pistons. After the ring lands are severly broken you might see broken rings. He is right in a sense…you have blow by…your rings are not sealing and the exhaust is going around the pistons and rings into your oil. If you pull the dipstick it should be much the same…if you are having blow by. DUnno if your turbo or not but if you are I bet it ran a little lean or had a little too much timing, detonated and cracked a couple rings lands.

Just because you don’t know how something happens, you think it must be some hollywood hype? Just like crank walk in DSMs right? :loser:

I don’t have turbo but I blew my head gasket and smoke use to came out the PVC cover( i didn’t have any hoses either) at while reving the engine about 5k. After I fixed my head gsket no more smoke.

Its blown rings gaurenteed thats why im parting out my Teg I dont have the time to fix it so im just going to sell everything. for some reason Piston 3 in the B series motors is known to be a weak spot espeacially if your running some kind of forced induction I am running turbo and I was driveing home sunday night Got on it a little bit and when I got off the freeway my car was running really ruff and smokeing like a chimney so the next day I yanked it all apart and sure enough no cross hatch on the sleeves and no seating by the rings, Now this is not a very expensive fix if you know what you are doing infact if you do it your self it can be done for a couple of hundred dollars and a few hours of labor no need to take the motor out you can just take the head and oil pan off go buy a ball hone hone the sleeves and put new rings on the pistons and slap it all back together. but I would also recomend doing a set of main and rod bearings if your going to go that far. just my two cents though

cylinder number 3 is always the leanest. that’s why when you install an EGT guage. you usually want to put it a few inches away from number 3 cylinder and not wher they all collect together.

Welp, did a compression test today. They are as follows: #1 140 #2 120 #3 100 #4 150. So I figure my rings are toast. But apparently I have been running too hot or I do in fact have a bad head gasket, all the tips of my spark plugs were greenish white. Oh well, next project: Buying my $600 Conquest TSI.

Well…another update. I think the motor’s finally had it with my forced induction shenanigans. She is noticably losing power the more I drive her (20 miles a day at most) Sitting in traffic waiting on an accident to be cleared up, I decided to turn around cause I figured all the other people were about to die from smoke inhalation. Another teg bites the dust…

Well guys, I am leaving the Integra community. After a little drive on the interstate last night my motor went bye bye. I knew it had bad rings in a couple of the cylinders, but apparently the seals couldnt handle the compression. She just fell on her face after a couple miles of smoking real bad and I am pretty sure that I blew the crank and/or cam seals. Oh well, we live and we learn. Good thing is that I already have the motor, injectors, SAFC, and wiring harness sold and the shell is soon to be sold. I will have an SSAutochrome manifold up for sale here pretty soon if anyone is interested. Just in case anyone was wondering, I am planning on buying an 88 Chrysler Conquest TSI, drifting: here I come!!

sorry to see ya go… good luck with the conquest though, my dad used to have one… hella fun car and a lot more unique

i know you had an afc hack, but what did your tuning consist of?

Well, since I had the Gen 1 SAFC it could only go to -30%, so I had all settings at -30%. It always ran rich when I got on it even just a little.

In the words of Hank Hill: “Yep”

integphreak, you should talk to my friend with an 87 conquest tsi. after speaking with him, you will probably find yourself not wanting one. nothing but problems with it since he bought it two years ago. every week he has a new story to tell me about it. mitsubishi basically took a motor made for a truck, turbocharged it, and dropped it in a sports car. The turbo’s small, the fuel delivery and intake manifold are archaic designs, and I just don’t think it’s worth the time and effort to own one. There are many other rwd vehicles you could try over a conquest. Don’t get me wrong, I like the way those cars look, and it’s cool that it had a turbo motor in it, but it would be better to drop in a 4G63 in place of the outdated one. If you absolutely must have one, just make sure you prepare yourself for some issues.

I probably wont end up getting it anyway…the guy keeps dicking around so I havent even gotten to see it yet. Im noticing that it’s hard to find a car around here for under $1000. Which is all I can spend since I will have to save up cash. Oh well…sh|t happens, wear a diaper.

damn man im sorry to hear the bad news. i hope your next car gives you love like the teg did

Is the body of your car in good shape? If so, I’d probably build a motor for it if I were you. I love my integra and it would take a severe crash to get rid of it. :manual:

it’s not terrible. Other than the typical rust in the rear wheel wells, it is rusted out behind the upper windshield seal, and I painted it flat black. I dont really want to dump any more money into her. Its gotten me in too much trouble with the law as it is. not to mention I dont need any more since I dont even get my license back till august 26th. I just need to find a cheap truck…I am lookin at a 92 blazer 4x4 tomorrow…back to the hillbilly years for me.
