AWESOME WRITE UP!! I only have one question: Is this something I should try if my idle doesn’t necessarily “bounce” but actually starts out HIGH when it’s cold then drops down (too low) when it warms up; & I get a vibration?

Adjust your idle

i used an 89 crx hf iacv on my b17 intake mani. bolted up perfectly. my d15 iacv did not fit my b17 im.

wierd. how much different were they? hf = d16 right

no, the hf is also a d15, just an earlier model, a base 62 hp model. the holes on the eg motor were closer together where as the b17 and hf the bolt holes are seperated futher.
another tip for those who have a surging idle when its cold…replace the spring in the fast idle valve. i used one from an h23 head. settled my idle problem perfectly.

I have this same problem, with it idling high until its warm, but once its hot it drops to a choppy low idle with vibration. I can adjust the idle adjustment down, but I can’t make it idle any higher. I am going to try cleaning my IACV and see if it helps.

ugg this happened again…is there a way to clog it up ?

me too

im having that problem too. when i start cold it idles like 1500 to 2000 rpms. when it warms up it will drop so low that it just shuts off sometimes. will this work for me. anyone with the same problem what worked for you?

did it work??? i have the same problems

what a great post, very detailed pictures and very clear on what to do. Appreciate all that you guys do, thanks so much.

The IACV was simple to locate, just against the firewall so a little hard to work with. Once I had it out, I cleaned as stated and reinstalled.
My car still idles a little hard will let you know if it helps with gas milage.

Same problem but tip didn’t work

I have the same problem but when i cleaned out the IACV and put it back on. when its cold, my car idles high. on top of that my temperature gauge doesnt go up when it’s warm. then my idle bounces from 1k to 2k and down again. my car began reving even higher than before. I don’t think that I have a vaccum leak anywhere. one of my friends said one of the hoses were clogged. but i dont know which hose exactly. So if you can help me, relpy.
thanks

cold idle problems should be more related to the Fast Idle Valve. sounds like you have multiple problems you need to troubleshoot first.

Great write up, its the same for my 97 ls, im gonna do it later tonight ;p

Tried this out, and I’ll be damned if I couldn’t get those bolts out… didn’t have a 12mm so im gonna go to a friends to try to do it and clean my o2 sensors tommorrow.

hmm i wonder if this will fix my idle problems

symptoms
idle at 1000-1100 when at full temp
when lights are on idle at 850

i will clean it anyway this weekend…i’ve done a bunch of other things to figure out my idle problem…i’ve had it ever since i swaped my b16 into my 90 integra

just took my IACV off, sprayed some carb cleaner in 2 holes, a lot of dirt came out so now im waiting for it to dry, hopefully my idle works better now, ill tell everyone how it goes when i reinstall.

my problem just happened yesterday, my idle was bouncing from 1500-700 and was getting very annoying quick, so hopefully it fixes the problem, if not ill try the FITV

ok my idle works perfect now, even feels smoother. thanks for the write-up

Thanks, good write up!

I was having problems with the FITV and IACV; tightened the white barrel screw in the FITV and cleaned the IACV. All idle problems went away.

One note, though: the coolant hoses on the IACV are a bitch to get off. I had to cut the long hose to remove the valve. BIG mistake… those hoses are cut exactly to the right length, so I had to stretch the hose to get it back on (I didn’t have any spare tubing laying around that was long enough to replace it). If you are having trouble removing the tubes, try using a pair of channel locks or something similar to grip the tube where it slips over the brass nipple and twist it around until it loosens up. The rubber has a tendency to harden and adhere to the brass when it corrodes.

i have a problem with my idle boucning when i’m moving. can anyone help? i don’t know what rpm i’m at, it bounces really fast up and down.

quick method

this my sound stupid, but: i didnt have time to spray the iacv and let it dry…i just unbolted the 2 bolts and i used cu tips lol…yes cutips and put it in the iacv and cleaned out most of the gunk and it seemd to work cuz my idle no longer bounces and the ecu is no longer throwing the bad idle code :stuck_out_tongue:
