The Devondangers Build Thread!
Not that anyone actually reads these, but I’ve been a busy boy indeed.

So… Installed OEM valve cover gaskets, spark plug tube seals, Bosch Platinum spark plugs, new wires, filled the radiator, Seafoamed, vacuumed, washed, and drove her.

All in 2 hours. I love this life sometimes, but business does not leave much time for my girl and my fiance. I spent a good chunk on one of the ladies in my life (as I say to my fiance, LOL) and she purrs like a kitten. :D
Way to be, keep the family happy and they will let you keep your toys. xD

Got that right. I tell my fiance all the time, I got two ladies in my life. You’re one of them, Suki is the other. She’s the more expensive of the two, but it’s worth it when the road is right, you know?

Haha that will soon change. But that is cool your lady let’s you have your toys.

Ugh. I think now is as good a time as any to announce that once I’m getting consistent paychecks from my new job, I need a new engine. Anyone got leads on a relatively cheap B18c1? If not I’m going to hmotorsonline.com and buying myself a b20b.

The reason for this is a rather picky head gasket leak. It only leaks sometimes, but sometimes is enough to drive me crazy. Maybe a wire tuck is in order, if I can convince Glynn and Mr. Penny to give me some help. If not, I need a cherry picker and a stand for a while.

Not to nit-pick at all… but is there any particular reason you chose to run a Bosch plug? I detest them and have had some bad experiences with them. Run the NGK 4644/BKR7E at oem gap, your motor will thank you.

Nice ride though, I sometimes wish I had painted mine black… meh.

Dunno. Bought them at considerable discount, so can’t really complain. My head gasket is a larger concern to me right now.

The wire tuck will not fix your head gasket issue. Just sayin.

You are crazy. Your paint looks soooo nice. Grass will always be greener I suppose.

If you’ve got the dough to spare, and dont have a local deal on a B18C, HMO is definitely a great company to deal with.

Aren’t there a couple of B17’s floating around in CO? That could be a fun route as well… But having to source parts vs buying a full swap is kind of a pain.

That’s just it, lol.

Plus these 17’s are high miles and could use some work themselves. A nice hassle free motor seems like daily driving bliss. Otherwise I have a longblock for 600.

Also, after riding in a couple B20 cars and a few B16 and B18C with varying mods, I would say go with the B20 higher comp. Save a grand or 2, use your existing ECU and wave at the B18C peeps while you pull the shit out of them, or anyone else in an 81mm vtec engine with basic bolt ons. Plus B20’s are quite happy under 2k rpm, which does equal better mileage. And you won’t have to worry about the trans, because your stock LS will neuter a vtec engine. I have to say, for less than a grand shipped, I am a huge huge fan of these motors. Try that with B18c

LOL, I KNOW that…

I know, it was just the way you worded it :stuck_out_tongue:

Honestly, I have a bit of cash, but not nearly enough to buy a b18c and properly install/build it. Which is why a high compression b20 sounds great right now.

I’m looking for another engine, because the cost of a head gasket and the mileage I have on my lower end make me want a new motor.

Defiantly save up for a new motor, it will cost way more to revive that old tire one thats in the teggy right now :corn:

So ill post this in your thread cause i dont wanna thread jack glynns. Either way this is just my opinion and observation of jdm b20’s i have seen.

both 96-98 and 99-00 b20’s can come with a p8r head. Personally i think the 99-00 p8r is rare. Rabi’s is stamped both p8r and for 00. Although Steve has sent us a 00 he claimed to be a p8r but in fact the IM was just stamped p8r, it was just a high comp. Either way that head drops the compression down so the year would really be irrelevant. I personally would look @ it this way. If you want a p8r I wouldnt care about year. I would ask Steve for the freshest one he has and pay a little extra for it. A high comp would be just as good if not better out of the box as a P8r. The p8r has more upside with air mods, cams, etc. Either way you get what you paid for. There is a diff. in price for a reason, I wouldnt discredit the high comp as iv seen one in action. It all comes down to what you want.

What I’ve been up to…

Well, damn, it’s been about a month since the rod knock ended my fun, and with winter’s first snow on its way down as we speak…

Bought myself a b20, local deal, low comp, but I needed an engine for cheap, and it fit the bill. I have almost everything ready to swap (taking my time), but I still need to buy a radiator (Glynn, get back to be on here or whenever tomorrow. Not tonight, I’m way too tired, LOL), and a picker.

All in, I have bought myself a new OEM timing belt, tensioner, water pump, valve cover gasket, exhaust manifold gasket, IM gasket, oil, antifreeze, and filter.

Removed: Bumper, radiator, PS & AC brackets, exhaust manifold, valve cover, battery, etc.

Left to be removed: IM, Shift linkage, engine+transmission.

New parts to buy: “Bitch Pin” (maybe) Ball joints (maybe), axle boots (not sure what they’re called exactly, and maybe), mount inserts (maybe), and linkage bushings (maybe).

BTW: My P8R DA got pulled by Fares’ JDM GSR teg, and he had a passenger and 2 extra doors. I rescind my previous comment. Thing walked me hard in 3rd.

I have slightly used ES bushings for the linkage I can sell for 12 shipped. Only has 10k miles or so, car was never a DD so it was always in nice weather.

Hmmm, or local pickup? What city you in?
EDIT: Never mind, mind’s out to lunch…

I might be able to if you can send pics…

Ok, well.

Where do I start with reviving a dead build thread?

It’s about damn time I updated this, but since I don’t technically have Suki back on the road, this’ll be a fun one to write.

Long story short, I blew a head gasket and eventually overheated it and burned the bearings (low-end rod knock). It wouldn’t start. So I went with my good friend Glynn (who has done nothing but help me, props to him for all the work he’s done to help me) to pick up a low-mile, HMO-stamped B20B, local pickup. Brought it home in a CR-V. (Irony, anyone?)

While work kept me busy as hell, I managed to strip down the B18A1 to almost bare block, borrowed a cherry picker from Glynn, and got ready.

But it never happened. It was either too cold, I was too tired, or I had too much going on. So I eventually caved and towed it to a friend’s house. He’s been a 20+ year Acura mechanic, and thus has done this swap a couple times. As I sit now, it’s almost ready to be back on the road.

No build of this part of it, but I do have pics of the swap. Sorry for the lack of pics, but I was lending two hands as often as possible to helping with the swap.
