vtec + turbo = ?

i have heard that it is not very reliable to have vtec and a turbo. i have heard that when vtec kicks in it will mess up a turbo. is this true? it is as relaible to have vtec or not?

:stare:

read the turbo guide sir.

No.

Why would engaging VTEC wreck a turbo. If anything, that jsut makes the turbo happier. I’m on B16 Turbo.

well from what i understand is that when vtec kicks in the overlap increases and when it does that boost flies right out the exhaust valves. so to make a turbo work good on a vtec motor you basically need some custom turbo cams and cam gears to make it to the point where vtec changes over thier is basically no overlap but that is just what i have gotten from reading around the internet. but to answer your question no it wont hurt the turbo in any way i dont think it is possible. r u sure that wherever you heard that from wasnt talking about the performance of the turbo.

yes overlap is bad when you engage into vtec but with stock cams it’s hardly anything at all. Heck there are people running NA cams and turbo and still making more pwoer then they were when they were on stock cams. My old b16 I ran regrind cams to ITR specs and it was really damn strong.

i thought that it would be fine but this guy thinks that a turbo on a vtec is more
likely to blow up the engine.

I think a VTEC turbo is the most fun I’ve ever had in a car. The guy’s been driving really hard on 10psi on a B18C for about a year now and has had no problems.

the only time you need to worry about the motor blowing up is when somebody runs 20 psi on a stock block. if you going to do it do it right build the block a little bit. ya its gonna cost you money but you will have the peace of mind.

PSI doesn’t break or blow motors.

ding ding ding ding we have a winner!

Absolutely right.

I’ll be running Crower 402-2 NA cams with turbo on my VTEC setup.

Turbo loves the overlap…to an extent.

Cylinder pressures destroy engines. (ie. too advanced timing, lean conditions, horible flame fronts from domed 13.5:1 pistons, etc.)

what do you mean psi doesnt blow motors i dont understand. i am new to the turbo world and no trying to cause an agrument but if someone could jsut explain that a little clearer i would apperciate it
thanks

Detonation blows motors…

TYPER+DA…how old are you…

22 just got into the turbo world right now i have a jdm itr with toda specb cams toda cam gears, toda valve springs, and protflow retainers. also i have made itbs. with honda cbr itb. i just feel it is cheeper and a hella of alot faster to build turbo than all motor so i am trying to learn about turbo and see if i want to sell me itr set up and swap the stock ls in and go turbo… what do you think?

The intake cam won’t affect exhaust overlap at all obviously, so I wouldn’t worry about that. I think a stock GSR cam with an agressive intake cam is good for making power on a boosted Vtec setup. If there is a little overlap it can always be tuned out with cam gears.

I agree, i have talked to a few ‘real’ tuners that say that they have had more success with gsr cams than others. Although a buddy just got some web cams that are just a super aggressive NA cam, but the exhaust is just retarded a bit to decrease overlap.

I have gsr cams in my boosted b16a and it works fine. Vtec + turbo = high revs and great power. In fact, I engage my vtec as low as 4400 when most na guys are a lot higher (5500-5700).

i think i am starting to understand a little better but more would help. Now would you ever want to run a set up like a ctr intake and gsr exhaust or is a ctr just to agressive?

NA means naturally aspirated…
